In't North Riding (known as Scotland) tis more of the heavy.
In't West tis the blood of them over the pennines.
Tut South is full of theiving tax men and vagabonds, all the way tut Channel.

Re: What's the Difference Between . . .

So if I put a dink on the aft deck, im a ship?
What if you use a 22' sail boat wit the mast down, as a tender, does it become a dink or is it then too big.
What about a 10' dink with sails. Is it a sailboat?

WHen is a village a town?
When is a hill a mountain.
When is a terrorist a freedom fighter and vice versa?

Who decides the classification of 'things'?

So James, will you kindly adjudicate for us and give the classical definitions?

Re: What's the Difference Between . . .

a dink is - a dinghy, a tender, a small boat, an auxiliary,
a boat is - a boat is a boat,
a yacht is - a bigger pleasure boat, sail or power, esp. one with a cabin,
a ship is - a bigger, working vessel, cargo, cruiser, ferry, etc.

all of the above are - vessels

a ship and a boat are pretty generic, each way

a dink and a yacht are pretty specific,

In some places (e.g. in Spain) a yach is ONLY a large and luxurious thing, esp. a motor one. This results from the tradition where there were the yachts owned by the few privileged ones and the boats owned by the working class (fishermen mostly); there was no in-between until well into the 20th century.

My 26 ft sailing boat can be referred as a yacht in her home country but in Spain she is degraded to a boat ;-).

PS But I think we should stick to English words and how they are used.

Re: What's the Difference Between . . .

Hmmm
Thats another viewpoint

Is a boat a vessel with no upper deck, ie, open?
Is a dink something which can realistically rowed

A viking longboat was both open and rowed, hence the term longBOAT
But a Phonecial Galley was also rowed but usually refered to as a ship as they mostly had an upper deck with slaves below doing the rowing.

If you cant see the woods for the trees, how would you classify a duck billed platipus?
It has fur and lays eggs but it warm blooded.

A conundrum I know, but I must know. If ye see what I mean?

Re: What's the Difference Between . . .

What's the difference between a bull and a cow?
A bull smiles when you milk it.

What is the difference between men and women?
A woman wants one man to satisfy her every need; whereas a man wants every woman to satisfy his one need.

What is the difference between a man and childbirth?
One can be terribly painful, and sometimes almost unbearable; while the other is just having a baby.

Nice one Gord, but I was kinda hoping a man of your infinite knowledge would also solve the riddle please.

Where does genius end and madness begin?

Re: What's the Difference Between . . .

A boat can earn a living; a yacht doesn't have to: both can be carried aboard a ship, but it better be a big ship to carry a sea going Tugboat. There are so many variations that it's really a matter of personal preference. What's the difference between Buckbord and Steerbord? Between Port and Left? What is ignorance? What is apathy? Who knows? Who cares?
