My favorite of his cartoons shows John Truesalt kneeling by his bunk, surrounded by sail boat models, praying, "Oh Lord, Forgive me! I went out on a powerboat and liked it!"

I think many Trawler owners have been there.

I've got a large print of "Old Salts" some where. I'll try to find it and scan it to post.

Two sailors in the cockpit of a small boat in stormy weather. Rain coming horizontally, sou-westers on, pipes upside down to keep the tobacco dry. Sailor one looks at sailor two and says "It must be plain hell ashore on a night like this."

I'm sure I have it on paper somewhere in the house ...

I have that one somewhere too.

It is interesting (odd) that this is:

1. Titled "Hard Cases"

2. Has one sailor "spitting in the wind" (and labeled as "To Windward")

How do you interpret that?

Re: Sailing and Boating Funny Cartoons and Photos and Art

It's a bit "darker" than I remembered it, but I suspect that's the style of the era rather than anything meaningful. As for spitting into the wind, I'll read it as an indication that they're ready to take on anything.

But this is getting way too philosophical

Another Hagar classic (and the origin of our boat's name). Dik Browne must have been a yottie... he drew so many spot-on boating oriented cartoons.

This is a photo of the original drawing, presented to us as a boat-warming gift years ago.

Ryan, no intent to hurt; we're old farts now, but we've been cruising a long time!

Mike Peyton is my favourite cartoonist

Mike Peyton's cartoon of the day: Friday - YBW

And my favourite is the one which I can't find ... big yacht motoring up a creek - presumably on the East Coast UK - bucketing down with rain... three men in cockpit in full foulies ... one saying to the owner ' so all things considered it costs you five thousand pounds every time you take her out'

Had a copy of that on my office bulkhead for many years...

Clicked on your link, El Ping, yesterday's cartoon was pretty funny. An old joke that has many forms, yes, but funny.

Thanks Ann, seems he is still out and about in his mid 90's...
