Great thread. I'm lucky enough to have sailed with some of the esteemed names mentioned. Back in my West Coast days I raced again Stan Honey often, however I don't think we actually ever sailed together. So, I will put him and Sally Lindsay at the top of my personal sailing wish list.

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

Albert Einstein was a sailor and legend has it that he often was searched for by the Coast Guard when he lost track of time or just got lost sailing.

The irony, however, was that Einstein wasn't exactly a genius when it came to sailing. "Despite sailing for over half a century, Einstein was not a very accomplished sailor," wrote Philip R. Devlin. "According to his biographers, he would lose his direction, his mast would often fall down, and he frequently ran aground and had near-collisions with other vessels."

What's more, Einstein rarely wore a life vest and could not even swim. This meant he was constantly having to be rescued – sometimes by kids and other times by nearby boaters. There's a famous New York Times headline that read: "Relative Tide and Sand Bars Trap Einstein." Another headline read: "At relativity, a genius; as a sailor, not so much: Recalling Einstein’s summer of 1939."

"There's lots of stories of him being towed back in," Lynch told us. "I found ample amusement in the fact that the genius of physics is a little bit confounded by the physics of sailing."

Lynch continued: "He was notorious for capsizing all the time when he was up on the Long Island Sound and on lakes in New York and New Jersey. His doctor, at one point, said he didn't think sailing was good for his heart, but Einstein kept sailing. The doctor was trying to talk him out of smoking and sailing, and he continued to do both, as I recall."

I would have like to sail with William F. Buckley Jr. His books on Atlantic and Pacific crossings are great. No matter your politics, he had a great heart and great wit.

Of course, Hayden. Lots of questions about his books. Jimmy Buffet because he owned a sistership of my boat...33' Cheoy Lee offshore ketch (according to the Cheoy owner's website).

Good choice! I did some regattas on Santana and a friend of mine got married on the boat on SF Bay. Magical boat, and to sail on with Bogart would have been great.

Pam Wall - could learn so much from her years on the water cruising with her family.

Jeff and Jean - would bring you totally up to date on all the latest equipment and how to use it.

Not "Famous" like movie stars or adventure sailors, but famous in their own right for their lives as teachers of sailing and willingness to always be helpful and of service to the sailing community.

Re: Celebrity Sailors--Who would you have liked to Sail with

Sterling Hayden; Yes, very likely an interesting guy t ohang around with sailing, given enough time to get comfortable. After reading "Wanderer" I went on to learn alot more about him.
Irving and Electa Johnson- I was lucky enough to be sailing as mate on a big brigantine and had I and E Johnson on board in my watch for a week. Wit hIrving as my prisoner (at the helm) I got to ask him everything I wanted to know about and after Irvings's answer Electa would tell me the rest of the story. I got to ask them all about their time with Sterling Hayden, for example. A wonderful experience.
Walter Cronkite: a friend of mine crewed for him out of Edgartown for a summer. A bit of a Pr--k by some estimations.
William Albert Robinson: I have done alot of research into Robinson- following all his books, tracked down his old shipyard and the remains of his fantastic old brigantine, Varua. I think he may have been a bit of a "pr-ck" , as well, but he did do many things and for that we must give credit. Cheers/ JC

According to Boat/US magazine December 2016, he was a monumental screw-up at sea
