A “White Christmas”?

A “White Christmas”?

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada [ECCC] a “white Christmas” is defined as having 2 cm [0.7874"], or more, of snow, on Christmas morning, at 7 a.m. EST.
https://www.canada.ca/en/environment...fall-data.html

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration [NOAA], a “white Christmas” is defined as having one inch [2.54 cm], or more, of snow, on the ground, Christmas morning.
https://www.weather.gov/dvn/ChristmasSnow

The definition that the U.K. Met Office uses to define a “white Christmas”, is for one snowflake, to be observed falling, in the 24 hours of 25 December, somewhere in the UK.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather...hite-christmas

A “perfect Christmas” occurs, when there’s 2 cm on the ground, while fresh snow is falling on the morning of Dec 25.

Many Canadian cities, like [my home] Thunder Bay, are virtually assured to have snow on the ground, on December 25th. most years, but, not this year, which is looking to be a green/brown Christmas [for the first time, in my memory].

Re: A “White Christmas”?

Environment and Climate Change Canada has analyzed 67 years of weather records, for 45 major centres across Canada, and calculated the probability of having a white snow-covered, Christmas Day.

Historical Christmas snowfall data (Canada):
https://www.canada.ca/en/environment...fall-data.html

Historically, Thunder Bay should have a 97% chance, of a “white Christmas”, and a 38% chance of a “perfect Christmas”.

We've had snow, lasting several days, this year - but it's long gone, now.

Ahh, Gordy... your Canadian heritage is showing! For us, a perfect Christmas is one where we don't need to light the diesel heater in the morning, it does not include hurricane force winds, the local rivers are not flooding and the sun actually shines enough to keep the batteries charged, and there is NO snow within sight.

And today, it appears that all but the first criteria are met, so not perfect but pretty damn close.

Merry Christmas to all!

Jim

Re: A “White Christmas”?

I recall reading that, Australia is the only continent, without permanent snow, nor a glacier.
I'm glad that you [Jim] are enjoying your summer weather.
Merry Christmas, all!

https://www.theage.com.au/national/v...25-p5etku.html
Central NSW had a white Christmas.
Not your typical Christmas day.
Sitting outside just now,2100 local, clear sky, 18º C, very pleasant.
Merry Christmas.

I'm home in Edmonton Alberta, having a brown Christmas. No snow, temps are lows around -10c and highs around+2c.
Which is very warm for this time of year!
Merry Christmas everyone!

Re: A “White Christmas”?

A very tragic Christmas:
10 people dead after spate of severe storms across eastern Australia

More ➥ https://www.theguardian.com/australi...tern-australia

And ➥ https://www.9news.com.au/national/we...d-e76b9e8bda2b

At least 10 people, including a nine-year-old girl, have died in eastern Australia, during severe thunderstorms on Christmas, and Boxing Day. Most of the deaths were in the state of Queensland, where tens of thousands of people are still without power.

The latest storms come more than a week after major floods inundated parts of Queensland, during Cyclone Jasper, with some areas experiencing more than a year's worth of rain, in just a few days.
They follow a series of heatwaves that have seen states, including New South Wales, battling bushfires recently.
The country is currently enduring an El Nino weather event, which is typically associated with extreme events, such as wildfires and cyclones.

Among the 10 people killed in the extreme weather over Christmas and Boxing Day was a girl, named in local media as nine-year-old Mia Holland-McCormack, whose body was found in a flooded storm drain, after she went missing.
Three men drowned, after a yacht capsized, near Moreton Bay, off the coast of the city of Cairns. A further eight people had to be rescued from the water.
A man, whose body was found in Victoria's Gippsland region, is thought to have been camping with a woman, who was also killed.
Two women were found dead, north of Brisbane, after being swept away by floodwaters, into a storm drain, while a further two people were killed, after being hit by falling trees.
