Re: Second liveaboard question: aerobic exercise?

Jim,

Passages were the greatest challenge for us to do steady aerobic workouts until we discovered this device https://amzn.to/352Vokf which neatly tucked under the step at our helm when it wasn't used - but I'd slide it out and use it every day during my shifts at the helm. We sail fairly flat because we are a catamaran; it might not work as easily on a heeling monohull.

Another great exercise tool to keep aboard for muscle strength is this https://amzn.to/3lS7iUV We would loop it around the mast and do our workouts using our body weight in this cleverly designed system. The exercises were deceptively challenging and

At anchor you'll have more options. We carried two Dahon fold-up bikes that we could easily put in our dinghy and take ashore. Water sports of course - and good ol' cleaning the boat/boat projects/keeping our soft ablative bottom paint, and general boat living provided exercise. We have a Red brand SUP and a SeaEagle Sail Kayak that we like a lot too.

Stay healthy!

As I said, I'm 65. I cycle, with a nice road bike, an hour or two every morning, pushing it with a with a heart rate monitor. I feel it is critical to my health and physical and mental well being.

But how can I get aerobic if I'm at anchor, or sailing on long cruises? How do you do it?

Thank you...

Jim

Dan, Everything I’ve learned about the compact steppers and peddlers is that they are just too funky for regular use. I read you post and will give it a try. I don’t have a Fitbit, but I think my phone will count the steps for me. Thanks.

Welcome. If the phone does not count steps, one of my old dumb cell phones did count steps, a simple pedometer works too.

Later,
Dan

Anyone using peloton onboard?
Is it worth it?

Exactly how big is your boat?

The local YMCA holds swimming lessons in the pool on my boat. I’m going to get a new running track installed around the helicopter.

don't be too harsh guys...a peloton (static) exercise bike will fit on a lot of medium size cruising boats

Tiny very tiny
No room for gym equipment here
But based on pictures of a peloton they appear to take some space

My intention was just to joke around with AKA none. no harm meant towards anyone.

For the record, I could easily put multiple pelotons in my boat. So I’m not picking on anyone’s boat size. It sure wouldn’t go very fast though.

And here I was thinking you’d hook it up to a hydraulic pump to run your winches silly me

i vaguely recall this being done on either 12m america's cup boats or some maxis of similar vintage (before rules were changed to allow motor boats...)

cheers,

cheers,
The AC boats have been using hydraulic pumps, operated by winch handles (or bicycle peddles) to move the sails and foils. Tremendous exercise. But you have to use the power as you produce it. Not so good for a cruising. You can store electricity but generating amps with muscle power is not very easy. Bicyclists may generate around 400 watts for short periods, so about 30 amps. Not bad if you can sustain it but an adult of good fitness is more likely to average between 50 and 150 watts for an hour of vigorous exercise, which is 3-12 amps.

We prefer swimming for exercise when at anchor, where possible. In port we'll find a gym (there is no room for an exercise bike on our boat, nor would we wish to devote the space for one even if we had room, we prefer a boat which is uncluttered and ready for sea, and focused on sailing).

But truthfully, keeping up an aerobic routine is difficult.

pedal powered radio has a long history in australia

https://adelaideaz.com/articles/alfr...ool-of-the-air

however as mentioned by wingsail, you would need a tour de france cycle team to actually generate useful charge in batteries

on the other hand, i wonder if an electric bike might work ???

cheers,
