Reliable small onboard printer in 2022?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has found a reasonably priced small printer which does not suffer to much from living on a boat when printing only occasionally.

The problem seems to be that the printer heads clog up and than they are done.
Humidity makes this worse.

How do you store yours?

We are not after a photo printer (can be, but not important), does not need to have a scanner, smaller is better & more important. Primary use is printing crewlists, documents, invoices...

Thanks for info from folks who actually keep and use one onboard.

Not using one on my boat, but you need a laser printer not a print-jet. Not impacted by humidity (except paper is always), and same power requirements (still needs AC power).

Thanks, interesting.
Anyone can recommend a really small Laser printer then?

I've been happy with Brother laser printers, but haven't had one on the boat. Here's a monochrome printer listed at $110: https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll2305w

And a color one at $250, and larger and more complicated internally: https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll3230cdw. Unless you really need color, I'd stick to monochrome.

We bought a small HP LaserJet Pro M15w Printer, White (monochrome printing only) a couple of years ago and found it to be excellent.

Initially just on the guest bed, now in a watertight box (o-ring seal) in the sail locker. We need it only a couple of times a year so it is not an issue having it in an out of the way spot.

Re: Reliable small onboard printer in 2022?

I have an 11 year old Canon Pixma ip100 that is printing like new, only on it’s 2nd set of cartridges and never been off the boat. Solid rep right there.

Of course it’s discontinued, it’s replacement ip110 is discontinued as well I think and they ask crazy amounts for new old stock. I checked it and I paid less than $200 for it. I see some 2nd hand in good condition for less than $100 now and I would prefer that over any new printer sold for less than $200 today.

Toner doesn’t do well in humidity but the question is how well sealed are toner cartridges?

Re: Reliable small onboard printer in 2022?

We sprung for the HP Office Jet 200 Mobile Printer. I don’t remember how much it cost, but I remember it being substantially more expensive than other small travel printers, but the reviews were good enough we went for it. No regrets. We have had it for a year and a half of constant cruising in Mexico. It lives stored vertically (which I was worried about) in a cabinet and has never missed a beat. No clogged heads ever. Good quality prints, and plenty quick. YMMV.

Brother makes some small ones. I have on at the house. HL-2170 or 2170W if you want wifi capability.

No, but Brother makes some that also scan. They get bigger, and probably more fragile: https://www.brother-usa.com/home/printers-fax/all-in-one#sort=%40productcataloglistprice%20ascending&f: condition=[New]&f:technology=[Black%2FWhite%20Laser]

That's going to be ours then as well. No need for color and no need for scanning.
Taking a photo by mobile and printing it is adequate in 99.9% of occasions. Little photo editing eliminates quality issues easily.

Thanks. As well for the storage suggestion.

Thanks to all others too.

Re: Reliable small onboard printer in 2022?

We use a canon ip110, which is a color printer and have found it to be excellent. We keep it in a ziplock bag. The same for the paper.

We did not spring for the battery pack.

We have it set up to automatically connect to our on board wifi and it has been foolproof. (Why did I write that here? No doubt it will start failing as a result..)

Re: Reliable small onboard printer in 2022?

Why not also choose color and scanner if one goes for a printer? The Epson EcoTank (https://www.amazon.de/-/en/EcoTank-R...dp/B09GB6CD1P/) is nice. The above mentioned Canon Pixma or the Epson Workforce https://www.amazon.de/-/en/WorkForce.../dp/B07Y9YPDZX are much more compact though (but I don't know them myself).
