We are about to go cruising in the Med and Caribbean in our Moody 49 for several years. The aft owner's cabin mattresses, double bed with 2 separate sides, are old and hard. Do we replace with foam or springs?

Or is there alternative we have not considered?

Out for years, springs it is. I slept on foam for two years. A mattress with foam over springs with ventilated panels around the bottom, is the goal for our current boat. The foam was comfortable but keeping it dry was work.

I have been starting my preliminary research into this.. I have been looking at latex mattresses as they are mold, mildew, and mite proof/resistant and from what I hear aren't as hot as memory foam alternatives. I'm just having trouble finding a mattress or mattress cover that's in the 6" thick range.

Also, if you wanted both worlds the froli system can be put underneath the foam to give a spring like support.

We use froIi sleep system which keeps it cool and dry and a 5inch polyurethane foam mattress w a cotton and memory foam topper. Prices were really cheap on the mattress and it's the same stuff the Marriott's use for their beds

Do you like the froli system? We have a 1985 Catalina 30 which is not the most comfortable to sleep aboard. The cushions are thin and a bit hard for my taste. We were thinking of replacing them all, but that is expensive...

Have you seen anyone use the froli system on a settee berth? Our starboard settee converts into a (almost) double sized bed which has the same issues as the v-berth. I don't know how we would be able to use this system there, as the table is used to make the base of the bed. Does the froli system have to be permanently attached?

We had a latex foam mattress custom made for our Beneteau for our trip to Mexico. It was more comfortable than our pillow top mattress and box spring at home. The folks who made it also modifed sheets and a gortex liner for us. We had no issues with moisture. It was pricey but well worth it.

Some of our Froli springs are screwed down some are not. There is a locker under one area of the mattress and when we access it, we need to lift the Froli system up out of the way to get in. Sometimes some of the plastic springs become unengaged around the edge of the mattress. Aside from that small problem it's a good system and no mold and we keep the boat in the jungle.

I'm going to surprise myself and vote springs. Our boat was built in 81 and no expense was spared by the original owner. 4 custom boxspring mattresses. The last owner had neglected the boat for years,many (most?) systems are not working well. The mattresses are. Steam cleaned they are comfortable and ready to go for who knows how much longer. I'm a memory foam fan and no one's more surprised than I.

The Froli system comes apart easily and is a lot of work to put back together. It is not designed to be taken off and put back on, but rather to be installed and left in place. I just took off the old system on our master berth and it was screwed down. It also adds significant height to the berth and gives excellent air flow. But it was heavy and made removing the boards a real pain when I needed to get under the berth to get to things there. I bought some of the Hypervent ventilation material as it is lighter and does a great job. It also adds a little bit to the cushion as it acts as a little bit of spring as well, but not like the Froli system.

Good luck in finding something at a reasonable cost.

We have a catalina 34 and had latex mattress made for aft cabin and in front vberth we use memory foam over boats cushions both r very comfortable. .never had issue with mold just keep cabins clean and wiped down with a mold cleaner

We have a sprins Handcrafted Matters in our Irwin. It has a hinge to access the locker below and is very comfortable after about 10 years. We have a local made therapedic foam knock off in our motor home for three years and love it too. I would be glad to supply his info if requested...
