Liveaboard locations in Northern California?

I'm looking for some help finding a good liveaboard location somewhere in Northern California. I'm getting ready to apply for grad school, so I'm looking for something close to a decent university. I'd also like there to be an actual sailing community with things like beer races and the like (one place I found, Moss Landing, didn't have an impossible waiting list, but it was in the middle of nowhere with nothing going on). I'm looking at basically anything from SF Bay down to Monterey. Santa Cruz was my first choice but their wait list is over 20 years long. Are there any good options that fit my needs?

You might try Emory Cove marina in Emeryville or Berkeley marina or marina bay in Richmond. There are several great universities within public transportation.
