LangKawi

Was wondering if any CF folks are/or have been to Langkawi?

Looking at having a new Seawind built and can stay anywhere, first choice was the Caribbean, but this Langkawi seems intriguing.

Any pros/cons to this area of the world?

Thanks,

meatservo

Re: LangKawi

Rebak island marina is as good as any and one of the best in Malaysia. Duty free fuel and alcohol. Fuel at Talaga @ $0.50 aud. Short hop to Thailand. Must see island Kho Lippy. And many more.

Re: LangKawi

When we were in Langkawi, we anchored off of Telaga Harbor, which was a good anchorage. We rented a car and drove to the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and talked with several boaters who kept their boats there. All of them complained about how rolly the marina was despite the recently-added breakwaters. We knew of several cruisers who kept their boats at Rebak Marina but they all complained of mosquitoes. I think one of the best things about Langkawi was the duty-free liquor where you could buy a case of beer for US$5.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: LangKawi

Langkawi is a great place to base a boat. Provisioning is good, parts can be sent in duty free, it has an international airport, people are friendly, food is good, great cruising on the island itself and the Butangs are just a daysail away. For better or worse, there is a large expat community. A lot of people, ourselves included, spend years migrating back and forth between Langkawi and Phuket. Warts and all, the Andaman Sea is a great place to cruise.

Re: LangKawi

Rebak marina indeed the place to be. You'll find all facilities there, and might hop into the amazing pool from the nearby resort for free.
Mosquitos are an issue but I have seen them being smoke bombed several times, before the evening sets in. So all in all nothing to really worry about.
I remember an impressive catamaran all in carbon (even the toilet seats were in carbon) named 'Dragon' who was sitting in the marina for months after being hit by a lightning. Not the worst place to wait for spare parts, trust me.
