The OP is Canadian. We have prohibited, restricted and non-restricted weapons.

My guess he should check the transport rules.

Transporting Firearms Safely

Non-restricted firearms

Non-restricted firearms must be unloaded during transportation.

Restricted and prohibited firearms

Unload the firearms; and
Attach secure locking devices to the firearms; and
Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container; and
Remove the bolts or bolt carriers from any automatic firearms (if removable).
Obtain an Authorization to Transport (call 1-800-731-4000).


Leaving Any Class of Firearm in an Unattended Vehicle locked container

Lock non-restricted firearms and locked containers carrying restricted or prohibited firearms in the trunk or in a similar lockable compartment.
If the vehicle does not have a trunk or lockable compartment, put firearms and firearm containers out of sight inside the vehicle and lock the vehicle.
If you are in a remote wilderness area and cannot lock your non-restricted firearms inside your vehicle, unload them and put them out of sight. Attach a secure locking device to the firearms unless they are needed for predator control.

A boat would likely be considered a vehicle

That is a good question.....what is an unrestricted gun? Is that a shotgun without chokes?

Q3. What are the different classes of firearms?

A3. There are three classes of firearms: non-restricted, restricted and prohibited.

Non-restricted firearms are ordinary rifles and shotguns, other than those referred to below.

Restricted firearms include:

handguns that are not prohibited;
semi-automatic, centre-fire rifles and shotguns with a barrel shorter than 470 mm;
rifles and shotguns that can be fired when their overall length has been reduced by folding, telescoping or other means to less than 660 mm; and
firearms restricted by Criminal Code Regulations.
Prohibited firearms include:

handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm or less and handguns that discharge .25 or .32 calibre ammunition, except for a few specific ones used in International Shooting Union competitions;
rifles and shotguns that have been altered by sawing or other means so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm or their overall length is less than 660 mm;

Autos and autos converted to semi are both prohibited.

Again, it is possible to carry shotguns, and hunting rifles in a Proper Gun Locker. Ive had very few problems over the years. But haveing hand guns aboard, no matter how they locked up will get ya ALL the trouble you can ask for ! and will make some lawyer semi-rich where ever ya get busted !! Just sayin forget you handguns get a shotgun and a secure gun locker aboard your boat !

I'd recommend anchor sizes as well, but that gets kinda controversial.

Since the OP is Canadian, I'll answer based on my Alaskan local. Just for fun. I sail with guns all the time. It's usually kept below, unloaded, somewhere safe and away from potential salt water. When I go to shore, it's close by and loaded (sometimes more than one-one for Bambi, one for Smokey). When I was in the Coast Guard, I thought it was rather funny when we got new crew who were on a boarding party team and had been qualified down south somewhere. In many places, such as CA and FL, having a gun onboard is a huge red flag for safety reasons. Up here, there's about a 50-50 chance of having a gun on just about any type of vessel. Heck, sometimes there's a .22 for the fish!

On a somewhat productive note, I have heard that there is some reciprocity for hunting in Alaska and the Yukon, at least in certain areas. Although I'd check, I'm pretty sure that the Alaskan border patrol would probably allow a Canadian through the border with a hunting rifle if it was legally owned in Canada and there was a clear plan to hunt.

Now, back on topic: what size anchor is recommended for a H54 with a deck mounted .50 cal machine gun with a healthy supply of ammo sailing internationally?
