Buying a boat and sailing the Carribbean

Hello,

My wife is from China, we're in immigration limbo for the US, so we came to the Bahamas to get our sailing chops up and look for boats we could buy here to explore the Carribbean.

We have somewhat incompatible passports, but there's at least a few places in the Carribbean we can go to: Cuba, Bahamas, St Kitts, Dominica, Haiti, Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, maybe BVI (working on the visa).

Just curious if anyone here has navigated the cruising permit situation in the Bahamas or other nearby countries and could provide any advice on how we might begin our journey.

The first step will be to find your boat and decide where you will register/document your vessel. Any decent brokerage can assist you or advise you on the paperwork involved. A lot depends on where that boat is when you buy it. I would talk to the boat brokers showing you boats.
