Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

Our Rubbermaid flip top salt and pepper shakers have worked well for many years. The salt lost its top. Vintage Rubbermaid sets are available but are used.
I do not like to use rice. The Tupperware sets ? maybe...but I’m not impressed.
The camping sets are way too small.
Is there a set that will really work perfectly for living aboard.

I use the standard grocery store sea salt grinders. And pepper grinders. They do OK.

I have bad news for you... The salt you are consuming is probably also used.

I don't know if this is an old wives tale or not....but I was told to add some rice to my salt shaker many, many years ago......the rice absorbs the moisture in the shaker...all I can say, is that in 4 0 years afloar, I have not suffered any problems with the salt shaker....

There is no way to keep pre-ground salt "flowable" in the humidity on a boat that is cruising in tropical places. It is just not worth the trouble.

You have to grind it "to order." You can buy pre-loaded one-off grinders, or you can buy a grinder from a gormet store and salt that comes in large crystals. Sometimes called "kosher" salt, or rock salt. We are not big consumers of salt, a four ounce, preloaded grinder lasts us over 6 months.

Either way, works for us for 20 years. Buying pre-ground "table salt" just doesn't work.

The eternal probem in a boat galley.


I know only two effective solutions --


1. "Flaksalt" -- flaked salt, as available in Denmark and Sweden -- grains too coarse to melt down too much in the humidity


2. Kosher salt in a salt grinder.


Take your pick. Rice in the salt bin only works shortly.

+1. We get ours at Stop&Shop in the spice aisle. Just have to remember not to leave it too close to the stove... the plastic melts.

Iodosed salt with a good dose of rice grains is the fix for the humid tropics. Just give it a shake prior to use.

We've been using these on the boat for at least 10 years. We've also given them as gifts, and we use them at our family beach house. The ONLY thing that's really worked well. We've NEVER had a problem. Even after our boat sat for 2 years after hurricane damage, the salt flowed perfectly. Have re-done stanchion supports on bulkheads, put new engine in, new sails, all new bronze thru-hulls, re-done most of the interior, new shaft and prop, new depth and navigation systems....Can't wait till I have this sort of a problem. :-)!!!
My wife would say I need to get my priorities right LOL.

I have been using a regular salt shaker half filled with rice. It has worked perfect for 4 years except it looks full when it isn't. Think i will start adding to all the seasonings.

A sandwich baggy works great for me. Cheap, and it works great though not the most designer friendly.

I know it's aggravating to have lumpy salt, still it's a first world problem.
A more urgent first world problem would be dirty sails (salty). As with the salt shaker, salt absorbs moisture in the air. That is why dirty sails when stored for the winter get moldy.
I use to wash my sails with mild detergent by hoisting them in the marina, wash the bottom section then lower the sail a few feet and repeat. Then raise the sail and allow it to air dry. Never had moldy sails and didn't need rice.
