Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

Excellent tip thanks, I never knew or heard of Flaked salt! I found out they are available in Australian supper markets as well.

I know only two effective solutions --

1. "Flaksalt" -- flaked salt, as available in Denmark and Sweden -- grains too coarse to melt down too much in the humidity

2. Kosher salt in a salt grinder.

Take your pick. Rice in the salt bin only works shortly.

Ok

My rice (shaker half rice and half salt) has worked fine from Maine to the the Florida Keys, the Gulf of Mexico to Mississippi, , and the Bahamas, in the normal regular glass shaker

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

For the record, S Florida doesn't have a monopoly on humidity. True, they take it to an art form in summer, but it happens anywhere on the water. Up here in Maine we get condensation on every surface when the temperature drops below the daytime due point. Oh, and have you heard about our fog?

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

I would suggest one thing better. In addition to using a salt grinder for large grain sea salt you should get a pair of salt & pepper which grind and exit the product at the TOP. That way you do not get grains of salt/ pepper on the table and in yr storage location.

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

For table-top, we use store-bought pre-filled one-time-use grinders. McCormick, preferably.

Pepper too, and the grinders allows some choice in courseness.

Then we also keep a few small picnic-size disposable shakers on hand too, more for cooking...

Salt tends to clump beneath the top and clog the holes. My opinion is that rice doesn't absorb moisture, but it knocks the clumps down....to a point.

Salt cellar seems to work reasonably well in my outdoor kitchen in St Pete FL. I have also used a vintage metal shaker that I can store over the stove vent to heat it up to dry the Salt (it clumps, but is easily agitated into a fresh stare)

Peter

There is a shaker with the lid having little indentations like nails. If you do half rice and half salt plus this lid, here in Miami it works well.

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

I like flaked salt. Lots of it.

I keep it in a wooden container. Works well.

It was all one big lump one time after being away from the boat for six months. No problem. Bang the container two or three times and it was all flakes again.

Salt grinder. Remove salt from grinder if needed and cook salt in fry pan to drive out water, reload.

Re: Best moisture proof Salt Shaker

I keep our salt shakers in a sealable hard container with a reusable dessicant pack to absorb any moisture that gets in whenever I open it. We're in the bahamas at the moment and it seems to be working fine.

Something like that.

I do not like to use rice. The Tupperware sets ? maybe...but I’m not impressed.
The camping sets are way too small.
Is there a set that will really work perfectly for living aboard.
Thanks for replies.
Mark and the manatee crew.
Do you use spices to season your food? Save the used container for salt. Do not shake the salt over a boiling pot. Last for years. Mine did and still does a fine job. Goes for pepper too.
