Spanish VI's
Has anyone here cruised the Spanish VI's? Any tips, places to go, must sees, navigation tips? Thanks!

Re: Spanish VI's
Do all of the normal things: - Buy a guide book
- Check-in at Culebra and visit every anchorage
- Don't miss Vieques
When we were in the Spanish VI's 6 or 7 years ago, they were unspoiled as compared to the USVI's and the BVI's. The sail there from the USVI's is wonderful...it is an uphill climb coming back...pick you day.

Don't miss The Bio Bay tour on Vieques. Note that the popular anchorages close to the PR mainland can get very crowded and very noisy on weekends when the powerboaters come over.

Re: Spanish VI's
Top reasons why Culebra-(Spanish Virgin Island)is a great place to cruise to-
1)No cruise ships
2)Almost no charter boats
3)No moorings- lots of room to anchor- 10-15 ft (Dewey harbor)
4)Nice people-easy to meet, many locals & expats (go to Dinghy Dock Resteraunt)
5)Library with computers for internet- also has movie theatre.
6) Good snorkling at several places
7)Cheap ferry ride to PR for reprovisioning
8)Flamingo Beach-
9Inexpensive places to eat & drink-
Favorates- Dinghy dock, Zacos Tocos,Heathers
10) Two small supermarkets in town11) Safe to walk around at night (& day)
12) Not too many cruisers to spoil it.

Re: Spanish VI's
We were land-based on Culebra except for one day on the water to Culebrita and Cayo Norte. A couple of thoughts:
Don't miss a stop at Bahia des Tortugas on Culebrita. Quiet on weekdays, good swimming, friendly local turtle. Climb to the tower for great views of the area.
There's good drift snorkeling along the south coast of Cayo Norte. Anchor towards the West and dinghy eastward to drift back.
Zoni Beach is harder to get to than Flamenco Beach, but well worth the trip. It has gorgeous views out towards Culebrita and Cayo Norte and is all but deserted.

I'm inclined to suggest that you leave your boat at anchor in Vieques, take the ferry to Fajardo, google a few affordable bed & breakfast places to stay at on the "mainland", hike the El Yunque National Rain Forest, stroll throughout the streets of Old San Juan, and later take a car ride along the Cordillera Central just for starters.
And don't forget to pause along every roadside stand for a few cold ones and some tasty fritters.

The term for them is (somewhat) new. It was a marketing tool to draw folks to these PR islands.... Started in the late 90's IIRC.

Here are some of the sights from the trip I made last years to Culebra:
THE BIANKA LOG BLOG: CAPT. MIKE IN THE LEEWARD ISLANDS PART FOUR: CULEBRA
I plan to head back in a year or two for an extended stay on my boat. I also have some new video I took in Vieques this past January that I have not uploaded yet which you might find interesting. Will try to get to it this weekend.

I second that. I was in Vieques back in 1999. It was beautiful! I have a map that I keep for sentiment and want to go back. Will go sometime, just not sure when. Don't really even know why I like it there so much. Pretty, warm, plenty of places are. I had some good memories and I think that added to it, but I would make usre not to miss it.

Re: Spanish VI's
The best thing we found there is the Dinghy Dock Restaurant in Culebra. The worst thing we found was that at Culebrita, our anchor was smack in the middle of tons of unexploded ordnance. We got the heck out of there...
