Depends on what you're looking for.
I've had two
boats surveyed.
The first was a highly respected
surveyor in
Annapolis (who has since passed) who caused me no end of problems with the
insurance company. He cited my CNG system for failing to comply with the extremely onerous specs of today, even though it complied with the standards when built. He also confused a
halyard with a
shroud and I had to explain to the
insurance company why he was totally in left field.
My second was quite lax, and it made it very easy to get through insurance.
If you have significant experience with
boats and their systems, you might be better with a less rigorous surveyor. If you are looking for ammunition to try and get the
price down, then the more nitpicks he finds the better. And if you don't know what you are looking at, then you do want the most thorough surveyor you can find.
