Australian Boat Insurance (for Ocean Crossing)

I have called three different places in Oz and have been told by all of them that they do not cover boats outside of Australia. That's fine for the timid (or just tied down), but what about those of us who want to travel a little further afield? I need to get my new boat back from Mexico to Oz during the next year.

Come on Aussies... who have you used?

G'day, mate. Lloyd's Amlin should be able to help you out. I believe their Ozzie agent is in Perth. Sorry, I don't have the internet link handy. Cheers.

Re: Australian Boat Insurance (for ocean crossing)

The previous insurer for my boat was in Auckland NZ, at least the agent was. She was covered for ocean voyages at not much more than coastal cover.
Suggest you Google NZ marine insurance brokers

Re: Australian Boat Insurance (for ocean crossing)

I'm using a US broker who's organised cover via Lloyds. It only covers me while we are in the US/Bahamas, which is fine for now. The broker can't extend cover, but Lloyds will. Pantaenius seem to be keen to get involved, too and I've discussed the next lot of cover, after our US trip, with their broker here. They're easy to find on the net.

Re: Australian Boat Insurance (for ocean crossing)

I've used R & M Insurance brokers (Newcastle) for my previous boat which stayed local. They are prepared to look at different underwriters for offshore shorthanded vessels as required. I know of sailors crossing oceans (shorthanded) with them. PH 02 4962 4888. I have no affilliation apart from being a customer.

Re: Australian Boat Insurance (for Ocean Crossing)

I've recently received a quote from Pantaenius America for a Pacific crossing between Newcastle and Seattle. They said they could cover me if my boat was over 27 feet and if there was an address in the United States I could use. I had to cancel my plans for the crossing, but I'd give Pantaenius America a shot. The quote was very competitive.
