Re: Strange Phenomenon

All kidding aside, this was like someone hit a switch. The shoreline is virtually flat with no mountains within several hundred miles. In fact the shoreline is featureless for the most part. The weather was scattered stratus clouds with no vertical development. Some light rain began about 4 hours after I departed by which time I had returned to port. The water temperature is being reported as 71F from the data buoys. The phenomenon lasted over a 3.5 hour period which was about the length of time I was out. The two people with me were also surprised at how it went from hot and sticky in the harbor to cold then back to warm as we proceeded farther out. At this point I am leaning toward the upwelling at the near shore bottom slope as this was the distance that it occurred. I may ask a local weather person if they might have an explanation since this was such a quirky situation.

Re: Strange Phenomenon

Well we may have the explanation. I contacted a local meteorologist and was informed I wasn't the only one who had experienced this. The most probable cause was a rare upwelling event where the wind and waves have to be just right and strong enough to trigger the event. Good thing since I misplaced my tinfoil hat and I do really enjoy sailing.

Re: Strange Phenomenon

The opposite happened to me in Sudbury about 25 years ago in winter. While riding my sled I suddenly starting sweating like mad and then realized the outside air temp had risen from -25c to +25c within 1/2km. This continued on for about 5kms then just as suddenly everything was very cold again.

Nobody in our group that day ever figured out why it happened.

That certainly explains the Japanese Zeros strafing me and the F14s chasing them off. I also posted to a facebook group Lake Ontario Effect and it seems this was a massive event over a very long distance.
