Tiller autopilot drive unit

I have what I think is an Autohelm 2000 ram drive unit but no motor for it.

They don't produce them anymore.

I am looking for a cheap solution, maybe another brand or model drive unit.

My boat has a 10 tons displacement but very light helm.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

The new version is Raymarine ST2000 for tiller steered yachts. However, despite your light steering your boats weight is way over the top for them. Suggest you have a look at: EV-100 Tiller | Raymarine Evolution Autopilot

If the Evo is too much, then a second hand ST2000 may work in light conditons, however, they are very popular so fetch good money. We have been looking for a cheap one for years. You might find a chandler doing end of season bargins just now. Make the most of it, prices will be back to MRP in the Spring.

Stick the Autohelm on e bay in the Spring, someone will want it, but if you must paly with it then:

Oh and make a cover for it to keep the rain off, seriously then don't like getting wet.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

Thanks Pete.

The EV is a beauty but not s cheap solution.

The Simrad TP32 would be cheaper but still expensive. I might have to go for it if I am not lucky in my search.

I am just wondering if this is worth a gamble.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

And Simrad units don't suck in water, unlike my previous 2 Autohelm 2000's
2 X Autohelm 2000 = two very expensive mistakes.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

Can't see the one you posted.
I think they don't like links to ebay.
Anywsy I also found one on Ebay under
Autohelm 2000 tiller pilot.
I might bid on that one.
You have to be rich to be poor because it always cost more to buy cheap but hey, when you don't have the money, you go for the cheap one and end up paying more in the end.

I have a used st2000 that I had repaired but needed one while it was away so I bought a replacement. I'll have to see when I get home if I have the connector. $75 plus shipping. Pierced@mchsi.com

Pete

Our ST3000 control head doesn't either. I was thinking of configuring some heavy duty plastic cover, but then had a DOH! moment.

Saran wrap - worked perfectly yesterday in heavy rain.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

Pelagic autopilot. Brian will sell you the drive unit only. But the controller is equal to the best Raymarine so might as well get both

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

I am really sorry Boatguy30.
I have some difficulties understanding your message. English is not my first language.
Who is Brian ? Do you mean Twig ? Is Twig's name Brian ?
I went on your blog. Should I have seen a Pelagic autopilot for sale ?
If so, how much are you asking for it and can I see some pics.
Thanks

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

Hi, I needed to replace a motor once, instead of buying a whole new unit.
I searched for "Low voltage DC motor" and then chose images.
After a few pages I spotted the exact motor, ordered for a fraction of the cost from the "dealers" and replaced it. It only needed me to cut the shaft shorter. Everything else was identical.

Re: Tiller autopilot drive unit

Boatguy30 is right - look at the Pelagic unit. Inexpensive and effective. Get the whole package. Brian (the owner/engineer) sells an electric drive, but he also uses a hydraulic drive which might be appropriate - contact him for advice. Trying to keep RM tiller drives working on a 40 footer is Mission Impossible - they simply aren't up to the task - I have been through multiple drives/motors in their best tiller systems on my 31 footer.
