Re: New Mainsail with one reef point

Hello, TheSailingPiano,

Whittle points on three sticks, and stretch the sail enough to get accurate measurements. I think you're going to have a hard time selling a sail that the buyer can't really tell what size it it.

Sorry for butting in, but mainsail fit is really important.

Ann

What cloth weight?
What luff attachment method? (looks like slugs)
Exact measurements under tension?
Who did the measurements originally?
Who made the sail?
When was sail made?

Price seems high to me, most cruising boats would have to have reefs put in and that would be expensive.

If it is too big, it can be cut down to fit your boat, we've done this recently on a couple of new mains which were made to incorrect customer measurements.

I guess when you stretch it the offset is only one inch. Accurate measurement for luff is 40.3 ft or 40ft and 4 inches.

Curious as to what the cost is for cutting down a sail and adding reefs. It would help in determining what the overall cost of this post.

You will need to ask a local sailmaker. My experience has been with Mexican and other local sailmakers outside of the USA, and labor rates are much lower. This work is mostly labor.

The luff attachments also involve some labor and parts if they need changing.

This highlights the critical importance of proper measurements when ordering a mainsail. One which is wrong and needs major revisions has a very low value.

You sailmaker takes responsibility for this, it is worthwhile.

Re: New Mainsail with one reef point

Luff attachement is slugs of which I believe there is a photo
It is 400 cruising dacron. Which I think is 7 oz.
I did the measurments and the sail was delivered with incorrect luff size for my boat.
Under tension the luff is 40ft 4 inches.
Made by precision sails
I have a new main which fits so I am selling this one.
Will to take best offer.
