Dock for rent, Fort Lauderdale

Reference recent threads on residential docks for rent in Fort Lauderdale:

We had a thread going yesterday but now it seems to be missing in action.
Got several Private Messages with a bunch of questions about dock rental in Fort Lauderdale, here is a few answers that may be of general interest:

1) This is about residential docks for rent, not commercial or marina docks.
2) In this neighborhood there are no living aboard as there are no pump-out facilities and the canals are not zoned for liveaboards or commercial docking.
3) 98% of the dockage are Docks, not slips. (Alongside, not between piers)
4) The going rate is $12 per foot per month, $10 extra to run a 110v fan (per month) Air Condition 24/7 not included, guessing $40-50 per month extra.
5) Water for washdown is usually included.
5) This area is 3 miles inland and a good hurricane hole, it fills up quick with a named storm on the horizon, some folks even pay to reserve the dock in case of a storm, otherwise the dock is empty.
6) I don't charge for finding docks, just helping fellow boaters out. Most of the dock owners drop a case of beer on my door step, or buy me dinner if they get a contract.
Only once has this gig gone sour, what yesterday's thread was all about.
From now on security deposit for everybody.
Picture of a typical residential dock in my area:

Not expensive around here.
Try a nearby marina, $3-$4k per month.

We are a Cambria 44 sailboat. Is the dock still available?

Good luck, CSY's been around for a long time on CF and dock spaces anywhere in S. Florida are getting harder and harder to come by.

Re: Dock for rent, Fort Lauderdale

If anyone is looking in Fort Lauderdale, we have an available dock for up to 45 foot boat, sail or power (we don't mind which), quiet area, near LMC and two restaurants and fuel dock, just east of I95, suitable for 6 foot draft, no fixed bridges. About 45 minutes to the port.

Re: Dock for rent, Fort Lauderdale

Just in the interest of full disclosure for those who don't know Fort Lauderdale:

Many of the docks that get posted here, such as those in Citrus Isles, are far from Port Everglades and not really suitable for a sailor who wants to take his or her boat out for the day on occasion.

It's an hour and a half or two hours down the narrow, congested and tricky New River, including negotiating two low bridges with unpredictable openings that handle downtown traffic.

The river also can have an extremely strong current that makes it difficult to stay in place while a bridge is down.

Other docks may be closer to the ICW, but are still a long motor to Port Everglades or Hillsboro Inlet, including negotiating one or multiple drawbridges in many cases.

The docks are fine and affordable if you're looking for a decent place to store your boat for hurricane season or whatever. Smart boaters travel the river early or late to avoid congestion, run-ins with megayachts, etc.

CSY Man is correct that the vast majority of private docks in Fort Lauderdale can not be used for liveaboards due to zoning and the need for pump out facilities.

Sorry, I moved in 2022, sold the house and dock, not in touch anymore, but I know the local dock rents are way up since 2017, more like $900 a month now.

Suitable or not, I have been taking my boat out for day sails many times.
With a bit of luck you can motor from the Citrus Ilses to the Port Everglades cut in an hour, only if a bridge is broken or you go during rush hour when the bridges are locked down it can be a problem.
I lived there 24 years and transitioned the New River hundreds of times on my CSY 33 sailboat and a thousand times in the numerous power boats I also had including my commercial charter boat.
Yes, the current can be strong and the river traffic crazy but easy to avoid both by using a tide table and a calendar: Don’t run with a following current and don’t do weekends except early morning or late night transitions: The sandbar traffic and drunk boating has multiplied recently but the Citrus Isles are still a good location for proximity to boat yards and marine contractors as well as a hurricane hangout.

At $900 a month you'd be about the cheapest dock in town right now. I'm seeing $1,400 and up. It's insane. It's getting harder to find spots and there is that undercurrent of not wanting to deal with sail boats.
