Brilliant book, The first circumnavigator south of all the important Capes...

Some say ' not so! He only went BA to BA'... but prior to the trip described in the book he had single handed from France to BA and after WW2 he made several trips from BA into the North Atlantic and back .. all single handed.

Sadly his book was only available in.. I think.. french until the 1960 english translation was published... by which time it was yesterday's news.....

He has streets named for him in both Mar del Plata and in BA...

I named my pet penguin after him.......

A favourite bit in the book... he sails her alongside in Wellington ... rather more than a few days out of Capetown.. ties her up... and along comes some jobsworth in naval uniform... 'Oi! You can't tie up there....'

BTW .. the Adlard Coles edition pictured with my pet is the one to buy....

Another is "Round the World with Ridgeway".

On a round the world race, Ridgeway cut off miles by sailing in the Furious Fifties and Roaring Forties.

And the "Logbook for Grace".
