Guitars in a marine environment?

Will a guitar survive on a cruising boat in the tropics?

I don't know much about guitars (or cruising in the tropics for that matter). Is it enough to keep it in a regular guitar case and make sure it stays dry? Is it necessary to keep it in a giant piece of Tupperware with some desicant or would that be worse?

Does anybody carry a musical instrument with them while they cruise?

thanks,
