Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
Its worth seeing if you enjoy sailing. Just expect some innacurate scenes and you'll enjoy it.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
We enjoyed it very much.
Very good reviews keep coming in:
All Is Lost, review - Telegraph
The boat was just the vessel (pardon the pun) to deliver a very existential message and was not meant to be a "sailing" movie. Probably not a great movie for the American masses but should play better the the "arts" theaters and in Europe.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
NPR reviewer had it as #5 on his top ten list.
What was the quip? Redford was brought to the height of self control. Something like that.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
I liked the movie but it was definitely nothing amazing. I actually found it very calming watching him go through all the adversities step by step. My girlfriend, on the other hand, was a nervous wreck and is now terrified of shipping containers.
My main problem was with his fiberglass technique! Why wouldn't you wet it all first in a bucket, put some cardboard or something against the inside of the hole as a backing, then layer it up nice and thick all in one shot? C'mon!

Not a bad movie, all told.
The only thing that didn't happen to him, though, was getting robbed at gunpoint by dolphins in ski masks.

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
I haven't seen it , but its playing in major cinemas here to good review, Maybe its a bit like "Gravity", i just wanted a big alien spaceship to appear in that movie. Other wise the plot is, **** happens->various trauma follows->redemption-> credits.

It's more like: **** happens, then **** happens while **** is happening, then more **** is happening on top of all that **** happening.
The peril stacking is strong with this film.

I don't know how he expected to enjoy those nice white sand beaches for he had no dinghy on board.
j/k The movie was pretty boring imo, but I can see it's appeal to certain market segments, which I'm sure they're quite happy with having reached.

It was uninspiring, boring and a wast of bandwidth, till the ships kept passing him that was the only bit I could relate to, mind you now days everyone on my boat has a personal eperb + the boats one

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
I finally looked at it. Well not impressed, not much of a story line , then there all that " not talking" , every man I know mutters to himself when fixing things and I'm sure any decent sailor would has shouted far more then one " f#%k "
The best was al, the nonsense stuff
The way the boat steers itself
It submerges but no water goes below
I love the sextant plotting
And one ship comes by and he facing it , doesnt launch the rocket flares
The next one he fumbles it with the flares
Then he accidentally sets then liferaft alight
Oh and someone sell me the system he used to winch himself up the mast , like he has lifting a feather duster , or maybe he had a 6:1 ratchet main halyard ?
I think Flash Gordon movies were closer to real life then that.
What you had was a plot to force this guy into a liferaft , then force any piece of bad luck possible. Be interested to see the box office figures , can't see it interesting many people, despite what the critics say

Re: ALL IS LOST: The Movie
Dave, Forget the practical view of this film and let your mind be taken up with the art...your thinking too American and not enough European!

I didn't see much art neither. Not a word of French or a tastefully exposed breast !

Guess that would be difficult if there is only one man in the movie. That's it, they should have made him a transsexual.
Coops.
