Mattapoisett Harbor

I (miraculously) just got off the waiting list for a mooring at Mattapoisett Harbor, in Mattapoisett MA.
Does anyone on this forum keep their boat there?
Does anyone have any experience with that harbor?
I have two main concerns:

1) The harbor is not particularly sheltered and the boats are likely to take a fair amount of abuse when the wind gets up.
2) I am not a resident, so I am concerned that I won't be able to park, or I will absorb a lot of parking tickets if I park there on the weekend.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of a mooring that doesn't include parking. I'm not saying such a thing doesn't exist, but......you're paying to keep your boat there. It wouldn't be a wild assumption that you're not walking there.

I assume the Mattapoisett Harbor Master issued the mooring. I would think the Harbor Master's office should be able to answer this question fairly easily and directly.

For questions regarding the issuance of Parking Passes or Shellfish Permits, contact the Treasurer/Collector's office at 508-758-4100, ext.1.

I asked this question to the Harbor Master directly and according to the Harbor Master, if you are not a Mattapoisett resident, "parking is a problem..."

They only offer harbor parking stickers to residents, and the harbor has only a few spots for non-residents. I suppose one could always park on the street in town, but this is what I am up against, apparently.

Re: Mattapoisett Harbor

As far as shelter, it is true that the harbor is wide open to the SE. Fortunately SW is the prevailing breeze that blows regularly in the summer and Mattapoisett is fine. In the fall as cold fronts increase with strong northerlies you are protected as well. The time that you will be uncomfortable, especially away from the boat, is when a nor’easter, or a tropical storm or more arrives. The moorings are built accordingly with long pendants, good size floats, and lots of space between boats. I have a couple of friends with boats there and none have had issues even with the past few tropical storms that made their way up to Buzzards Bay with SE winds. I can’t speak for all so maybe others have different experience.

Mattapoisett is a great location.

How long were you on the list?

Thanks for this reply. That is very useful information and quite reassuring.

I agree that the location is great. Easy access to the Cape and the Islands.

I put my name on the waiting list last winter, so I was a bit surprised that I got off the list so quickly. Since I thought that I would have had a longer wait, I already paid for a mooring for this season not far from Mattapoisett, but this is certainly an option for next season.
