What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

Well we are getting near to our off!

Of course now I can not find anything to say that I own the bloody boat.

What do I need. I have an application for a copy of the Canadian Boat Licencing.

What else do i need? South Pacific Bound.

Re: What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

Places I have checked in examine your boat papers as much or more so than your passports. They want to see something that proves you own it, so some paperwork in your name would be good to have. It's funny because the USA and Canada seem more concerned about passports at the border, and could almost care less about the boat.

NP-
I don't know how it goes in Canada, but in the US if you were paying off a mortgage/loan to a bank, they held the original title, and when you pay them off they are supposed to transfer the title to you--but sometimes that doesn't happen.
You might want to check with them, find out if it was titled, find out if that was transferred to you.

And yes, get and save the bank account statements. We had to hunt them down 10 years later which was no fun... It is the obvious way to show payment has been done.

Re: What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

You might want to consider registration of the vessel to show ownership, which licensing a boat does not. Registration is voluntary though, and expensive the first time around (renewals are required every three years but are at least free).

If you have a dinghy on board, it will need a licence as well as your boat. Personally, it is probably better to license the dinghy and register the boat, since if you have the certificate of registry from Canada, you do not need a boat licence.

Re: What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

You mean the Federal "Registration", which you should have, not just "Licencing". The Registration give you papers showing ownership. These are two different levels of documents.

Only if the dink has an outboard of 10hp or more, mine has 7hp no need to licence

Re: What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

You will probably be stopped by local police within the USA if operating a dinghy without numbers on it. Florida is particularly big on that.

That is also true, hence my original statement that it is best to have a certificate of registration for the boat and a boat licence for the dinghy when travelling out of Canada.

Astrid which brings me back to my original question. Could I be hooped if I can not find the bits of paper! I used to have them safe! Moved them off the boat for safe keeping. Now 16 years later and 4 moves they are still bloody safe, especially from me.

Anyone checked into Fiji or rench Poly? What do they ask for? Maybe Puddle jumpers know?

Bugger I have 12 totes of "vital papers in the basement guess I am looked into going though them all/

Re: What are (Canadian) Ships Papers?

Vessel Licensing forms also state who owns the Vessel. SO do you need the boat to on the Registry of vessels. No one has ever said boo when I have gone to the states. I may have to ask my mates at the Frenchy Embassy again?
