Identifying a Hull Number

Im trying to ID our boat but the only lead we have is a hull number that was pressed into her wet cement when she was built (she's a ferro)

Anyone have any ideas?

All suggestions gratefully received

Re: Identifying a Hull Number

The Manufacturers Identification Code [MIC] will be the first three characters in the Hull Identification Number [HIN] on the upper right hand [starboard] corner of the transom.
The USA rules, for HINs, are in 33CFR Subpart C 181.21 -181.35.
In Canada, the rules for HINs are contained in TP1332.

Home Built Boat HIN [likely w a ferro-cement hull]:

The State* will assign the legitimate [built for personal use and not built for sale], backyard boatbuilder a HIN, with an MIC unique to that State, when you register the boat. This also applies if you build a boat for yourself, use it for a while and then sell it.

A State issued HIN will always start with the three letters xxZ, where xx are your State’s code. Eg. FLZ, or TXZ, for Florida & Texas, respectively.
A state assigned HIN will have the year and month of the HIN issue date, and not the year of manufacture.

Re: Identifying a Hull Number

Hi Gordo,

Many thanks for your reply

The Hull Number seems to be as follows:
ON 3328 s/5 3

(the seventh and eight marks are not certain and may be an imperial fraction and, we understand could refer to her designed cargo carrying capacity)

We think she was built in the early 70's.

We've had no luck with the New Zealand register here.
Ive emailed Canada as that's a possibility.

Thanks again

Re: Identifying a Hull Number

Pentos I was thinking it could just some random number. Maybe some hippies personal lucky tarot card numbers. I survey lots of older boats that have no hull number. It's even more common when they're custom built.
Cheers

Highly unlikely that its Canadian. The "s/53" is not part of the Canadian Registration or License format. The "ON" License prefix did not start in Canada til' 2006. The letters "O.N." as a prefix to registry numbers has never been part of an HIN but on a Registered Vessel must precede the Registry number and be permanently marked on a main frame or interior structural part of the vessel. i.e. O.N. 3328 might possibly work (tho' it should n't be on the exterior hull) however that number does not appear in the Transport Canada Registry database.

Hi Boatpoker.

Thanks for your input.

The number is located on an interior bulkhead/cabin wall high up near the underside of the deck. Apologies for any confusion. If I understand you right this seems to be in keeping with a Canadian process?

Re: Identifying a Hull Number

Pentos here in Australia the ON stands for official Number and then there is a row of numbers nothing else. I checked our registry and this is what comes up.

In that case it does but the fraction like suffix cannot be a part of it. I punched in the number 3328 in the Transport Canada Registry and nothing came up. You can try it yourself here ... https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur...rations/search

Wow Thanks. That's the nearest so far. Do you have a link to that register?
