I don't think it's that easy - I am pretty sure this is a mouse undervolt situation caused by inadequate solar array, obsolete controller technology, insufficient battery bank and of course that evil factory alternator. If you don't have least 1000a/h of LiFeP04 you are outta luck. I'd recommend getting a new boat.

What the hell, Carsten... you trying to get him in trouble? He'll need to get his mom to click that one, otherwise he'd be up for internet perjury!

(No one over 18 would call himself Crazyoldboatguy).

Yes, but, KVB,

SWitzerland is landlocked! I know there's canal traffic to Lake Gstaad (sp?), but how many of them are sailboats with their masts up?

Hi Ann,

Lots of sailboats (even big ones) on Lake Geneva. The Swiss actually do have a navy that patrols the lake.

Hope you weren't too shocked by the boatporn

Why, no, Carsten, I wasn't shocked! in truth, I liked it, and the efficiency with which the motoring cones could be deployed. But please don't tell anyone that, because everyone has been making this an amusing thread! and I am quite happy for it to continue.

Maybe the corners of someone's mouth will turn up when I confess I turned my computer so's every pic was coordinated with the horizon.

Which means of course is the horizon is "earth up" in the southern hemisphere and why you fly the cone pointy end up in the south as well...

I tried that with my iPad and it's still sideways.

Oh yeah, I have to flip another switch.

Arrrgh, Nordic boat porn...very frustrating. I have run down my battery trying to get it to play. It must be this Russian popup blocker I installed. Darn video just won't run.

We try to show our cone when on soundings
Offshore not so much
Rarely see one (or an anchoring ball) for that matter.
We always show the ball but are too slack on the cone
And it really is required by the colregs...

yes it is. There's no question. We have had this discussion and it seems most americans have never seen a cone, much less flown one.

On my vessel I'd have to hoist it off the arch with the ensign. And that would shade the solar panels even more.
If I were motor sailing it's view would be blocked by the sails or it would get caught up in the rigging. The chances of it being seen are slim.

I live in Switzerland, but it's not where I grew up. My first sailing was in Optimists, in Nieuwpoort, where if the weather permitted it we would even go out to sea in them. Then later I progressed to (for me) larger boats. The first "yacht" I sailed on being an Etap 20. We didn't have an engine, so didn't have to worry about the cone.
Then later I did quite a bit of sailing in Brittany with the venerable "Les Glenans" sailing school. A side effect is that I know the sailing lingo in four languages in the mean time.

There's no lake Gstaad. The furthest you can get is to Rheinfelden (on the Rhine). There it ends. Unless your boat is small enough that you can use the portage railways that exists at most hydro plants, then you could make it all the way to Bern even, where I live now.
Nevertheless, there is some great sailing here. Lake Thun has good wind in the afternoon, and I sail quite nice, fast daysailer there, with electric auxiliary propulsion and LiOn batteries even... So should meet with approval here. :-)

Re: A Thread for Jim and Anne Cate Including Boat Porn

You can't get from one lake to another with your mast up in Switzerland. Doesn't keep some people from trying though...

Sails are down, so it's probably OK that the cone wasn't up.
