Where to find deadeyes

I’ve been contemplating buying a lathe and needed tools and taking on the project of learning to make them myself, and now I’m starting to think that’s going to be my only option. I can find any online except for miniature ones for model ships.

Any suggestions on where I can order some or who might make them to order?

Re: Where to find deadeyes

Wouldn't a router be a more appropriate tool than a lathe?

Re: Where to find deadeyes

A deadeye generally has 3 holes thru it.
About the only use of a lathe would be to cut the circumferential groove for the metal strap by mounting the wooden blank on a wood faceplate using screws thru pilot holes where the bigger holes for the lanyards will end-up going.
Then the 3 pilot holes would be enlarged and the "leading in/leading out" reliefs cut into the wood at the holes.
A drill press for the holes, all else is pretty much hand work with curved chisels.
Traditionally they would be made from Lignum Vitae, a most perfect wood for them.
Today that wood would be 1/2 a fortune if able to be found in the sizes needed.
Alternately, one could consider Teak, Afromosia, Elm, Black Locust.
