Varnishing masts, booms, peaks

It’s time to wood down and redo my spars. They were done before I purchased her so although I’ve plenty of experience with varnishing it will be my first time doing spars.
My question is are there any tricks I’m not aware of on doing this on saw horses other than just miss the spots where them are supported on each coat and just make sure they are supported at a slightly spot on the next one?

I’m the kind of guy who might be halfway through coat eight when an old salt walks up and asked if I did xyz which would have made it much easier but now I’m almost done.
