Well, long story. It seems I've inherited my father's twisted way of doing things and have to tinker and engineer my own solutions, 'cause I'm cheap. Well to start I want to make a lot of the fittings and fixtures for our boat. CnC (Computer numerical Control) mill or router seems like a logical first step. I can make my own parts and molds for VARM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Molding).

Step 1 is the CnC Router which I've bought plans for and a few parts that I'll be cutting this week.

Nice lil' project to keep me outta trouble for awhile. Once I get the hang of using this tool I want to make some molds to do some vacuum assisted resin molding (resin infusion) of parts such as hatches, port lights, etc. That's step 2. For that I've started on some plans and parts acquisition primarily a reliable vacuum pump, which I have lined up on e-Bay.

First project will be some hatches. When I look at the price of them I cringe and know I can make them as good for a fraction of the price.

Dremels, Roto-zip's, routers or tooling spindles all work. Depends on the material you want to cut and how fast you want to cut it, within the limits of your machine.

The motors that move the tool around are special DC or AC motors that are called stepper motors or servo's. They are controlled by a computer that has specialized software to issue instructions to the motors via a motion controller (specialized logic circuits). The subject is too complicated to go into any depth here and I don't fully understand it myself! Yet!

A good place to start is CNCzone.com-Machinist Community Forums - Welcome Page but be warned, it is overwhelmingly in-depth to the unitiated!

I've been fascinated by CnC and robotics since I was a kid and a number of years ago I saw an 800' Lake Freighter being cut by CnC controlled plasma cutters and welded together by CnC controlled robots!

It was the VARM that threw me.
CnC. Yes very cool stuff. I have a mate that has a joinery shop and they have a point to point high speed router. They dump a sheet of MDF on the table and push a button and this little bit shoots all over the place and out comes a precut kitchen in minutes. I forget what the speed of that cutter is traveling at, but it is scary fast and it has all these sheilds around it, because a little chip coming off the cutter can kill you. It's happend too.
I also have a friend in the Marina that makes models. But these aren't just any model. These are some of the best and every single component is handmade somehow. They sell from $30K upto $100K.
They do a lot of molding and then flash it with silver and then electro build it up with copper till the desired thickness is reached. Or make a component, make a mold from high temp silicons and rubbers and then pour in pewter.
