SS Anti Galling lubricant

I am about to install some SS through-hull fittings but I am hesitating because I can't find my Permatec(?) so I'll have to buy some more and everything I look at is so hideously expensive.

Can anyone reccomend a good product?

Thanks for that but both damned expensive. I was hoping someone will say "just use XXX that's as good as anything".

My son (and others) use kitchen Canola Oil spray to lubricate their MIG welders and they say it's as good as the recommended lubricant costing X4 times as much.

Really? Too expensive?

$10 worth of lanocote will last you 5 years.

If that breaks the bank you need a different hobby!

Lanoline, like Billkenny said, is not expensive. Go to an ag-shop (agricultural supplies). Buy a non-branded sheep-wool oil or grease, (Lanocote is a brand), one pot lasts for years. I use it on all kind of steel, SS items and on rubber as well. It has also various medical application benefits, small cuts on hands and arms and even on lips and nipples.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

The Hiscocks, you remember them don't you, used to say that Lanolin was not a lubricant. and shouldn't be used for such. Don't know why so have only used Lanocote to keep SS fasteners into or through aluminum from corrosion welding.

I use silver 'Never Seize'. Still have the can I bought 40 years ago. It comes in silver and copper colored flavors. Get the Silver kind, think its made with zinc, and won't react galvanically with the fasteners. SS galling is a nasty occurrence. Assembled a Norseman eye terminal dry a few years back and had it gall. I'd probably done more than 30 of them dry over the years before that one gave me a headache. Tightening it up, felt a slight increase in resistance and within a half turn it locked up. Took two of us with long wrenches and cheater bars to unscrew the fitting. Of course the threads were toast. Always use Never Seize or some other lubricant when assembling SS fasteners. Galling occurs with almost no warning and really welds the parts together.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

I have experienced galling of SS just as Roverhi describes it. Strange phenomenon. Before you know it the fitting is locked up as if welded.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

Marine antiseize is metals-free for avoid galvanic effects. With salt in the environment, even normally sacrificial metals have been problematic. This can be observed both in torque results and coupon corrosion.

Locktite Marine, Tefgel, and Green Grease have done well. Lanolin and other greases, so-so.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

On second thoughts (after reading Steve's and roverhi comments) I'll give the lanoline a miss for anti-seizing.

I've experienced SS galling and I finished using a hack-saw to undo the nut.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

A couple of years ago I bought one pound of lanolin from Soapgoods(dot)com for $18.00. Shipping was about the same amount. Shipping might be cheaper if you're closer to Georgia, USA.

Re: SS Anti Galling lubricant

Thread galling occurs during installation when pressure and friction cause bolt threads to seize to the threads of a nut or tapped hole. It is also known as "cold welding". Once a fastener has seized up from galling it is typically impossible to remove without cutting the bolt or splitting the nut. boltdepot.com
