I prefer the ones with full-face shields and space for optical inserts. Mask + goggles just don't work for me.

The next question is what kind of filter, and I've had assumed that any particulate filter would work fine. Am I wrong?

+1 for full face mask. Tyvek suit as well. The make filters for all kinds of different things to be filtered. Get whichever covers your needs. Most will come with a filter suitable.

I'd check out the legality of sanding anti fouling in the open. (Australia has definite requirements) Our marinas supply "curtains" for that sort of work.
