Re: Remember 'breaking all the rules?'

Homeless posted that he was leaving CF. But, in a way, maybe El Ping is right, if he's lurking, he might be coaxed out by PMs. My guess is that he's said he was going, and he isn't coming back, but it's only a guess.

It was an aluminum boat, but not so much aluminum woes as sunken boat woes, the way I remember it.

Ann,

I believe you have a better memory than me about her being under water. I hope he and the boat made it home.

I think he bought it in your neck of the woods and was headed to China/ Taiwan or someplace in Asia?

The last pics looked good.

Roger

It is fine to have a discussion, this is an Internet forum afterall, but once the personal attacks came, we were all left without the rest of the story.

I would've loved to know how he finally got the engine going and if any other issues surfaced. We can all learn from these threads, even if we disagree on the OPs decisions or processes. But I'm quit certain we will see more of these thread endings as the 'experts' can't help themselves...
Well said. we need a bit more love on cf, it can be such a nasty place.

Yeah, I know how it turned out. It created a brand new thread in 2017. One that ain't over yet. And I still have doubts about the original. We need a smilie for smoke and mirrors.

Re: Remember 'breaking all the rules?'

I read the whole thread last night. Amazing tale. Since a couple of CF members reported seeing the boat as it made its way homeward (Singapore) I'll assume it was not "just" a tale but truth. Shame that a bunch of opinionated folks took issue with the most trivial part of the whole story, how to sell a boat. That was given as the reason for bailing from this forum. None of your damn business how he sells or feels about selling his boat. Homeless did not complain about the enormous amount of work and problems he had to fix while doing so. That was the story I took in. Yes, he risked a lot more than some folks would find tolerable when he started homeward, and I personally would love to know what the final outcome was. A fascinating story sadly missing it's conclusion. If you're lurking, speak up pls, or PM anyone you felt was supportive during your travails. There were a very large number of people pulling for you, only a few negative types in the last days.

Re: Remember 'breaking all the rules?'

He made a valiant effort, that is for sure, and made more progress on his own with his engine than I would have the knowledge and patience for. I recall wincing at his first few posts as the drumbeat of discovered issues commenced. I always thought it would be the engine and issues with the hull that would put the kibosh on his optimism.

I think he fell victim to something that those who have not owned boats don't appreciate, which is that if a boat falls far enough into that chasm of neglect and disrepair, the effort, cost, and time required to bring it to a level of restoration where it equals the condition and value of a boat that has been consistently maintained is enormous. Enormous isn't even a big enough word for it. Herculean is more like it. And it can be like falling off a cliff. A couple of years of neglect can be corrected for, but a couple more after that and the wheels start to fall off.

That thread should in fact be made a sticky as it very clearly illustrates, step by step, how uneducated (and I'm not saying stupid, he was a smart guy) optimism can lead you into a financial black hole from which there is no happy exit.

Hey, guys, Cliff resurrected the old thread, if anyone wants to go back and refresh their memory.

Anyway, if we are going to play those sorts of games, I thought we were all developing a Cassandra complex.

Stick that in your Herodotus and smoke it.

Re: Remember 'breaking all the rules?'

Is the boat a "54'' Hylas 2000 Raised Salon" named "China Doll" for sale with Jordan Yachts?

Probably not I guess because he says it is a Kanter Built??? I don't think he every provided any photos.

It sure was a good read and the guy had a solid work ethic and some serious dedication/commitment to the project.
