pirate Ohlson 38 refit

Hi! I'm fairly new to the forum but thought there might be some people interested in my project.

I have just purchased an Ohlson38 built in 1983 and feeling rather sorry for herself. I'm planning on completely refitting her and doing as much of the work myself as I can.

I'd love to hear any thoughts or tips and I will no doubt be posting lots of questions along the way.

Holly

You might be interested in reading East to the Azores: Guide to Offshore Passage-making by Richard Henderson. It describes his passage across the Atlantic to the Azores in an Ohlson 38. You can pick up a used copy on Amazon, or I can send you mine. Send me a PM if interested.

Re: Ohlson 38 refit

Great boat. Sailed one transatlantic, around some in Europe and from Tortola back to the states. Reliable handling in nasty conditions (40 knots/20'seas) and decent performance in pretty much whatever comes. Plenty of of stowage. Pilot berths were great for comfortable sleeping under way. Transom was not as raked as yours seems to be. Enjoy!

Nice boat, congrats.

Get some side rails for your dodger. It's a safety issue.

Fair winds.

Which Contessa are you on? I race Co32's in the south coast series, was out with them this weekend in fact. Its one of the reasons I love the Ohlson so much, very similar indeed!

Re: Ohlson 38 refit

Holly,

PLS keep on posting your progress here.

Ohlson 38 is a great boat. Well designed&built, strong, seaworthy and fast. And, to top it all, a pleasure to look at!

We met a couple sailing one when we crossed the Indian back in 2006.

What a shame so many of them got so abandoned and undermaintained over (so many) years. This however is where you step in and I am most happy to hear another one WILL BE RESURECTED.

Good luck!

Re: Ohlson 38 refit

I have recently been able to access a number of so far hidden files of the Ohlson 38 (and I will do more, time permitting). I will update the website dedicated for the boat with tech detail as much as possible for owners and potential ones to improve sailing performance and support potential repairs as good as possible. Please check Ohlson 38
