Need longer SS guards on rail

The Beneteau Oceanis have Stainless Steel guards on the teak rail at each clet. Those guards are slightly cured to fit the curvature of the rail edge. They are also pointed at the ends (I guess so the lines don't catch onto the ends). BUT they are only as long as the clet (about 18 inches). If I put a spring line on the clet, it will rub against the unprotected teak because of the angle off of the cleat.

I would like to purchase longer guards. Couldn't find anything in CF and I don't really have good "searching vibes" with Beneteau.

Without having them fabricated, and without changing the material, has anyone come across a solution.

I've tried to find deck photo on line of a Beneteau Oceanis 47 but can't see any of the handrails you mention. Can you upload a photo of yours?

Sorry about the confusion, I should have stipulated toe. Please accept my appoligizes for the condition of my teak in the picture. I've been away from her for a year, and just getting back. As we all know, we have higher priorities.

OP states these guards are on the teak rail at each cleat, and that they are curved to fit the rail, and that mooring lines from the cleat can cross the rail at points beyond the protected areas. So they are clearly on the toerails and not associated with handrails.

I've seen fairly narrow (1cm wide?) SS strips with pre-drilled holes for a countersunk screw. These are flat on the underside and rounded on top. Protection for toerails on smaller boats is where I've seen them. If they are not wide enough, then you could use two in parallel. The are sold as straight stock but can take a moderate bend, being not so wide. Not sure where to get them, sorry but they should be pretty standard.

Buy two more of what you have, move existing so end is centered on the cleat. Add new rubstrake touching end of newly repositioned rubstrake to double the length. Or cut both ends where they meet at the center of the cleat to a miter cut and sand smooth the bur or have it welded.

Alternately cut out some Starboard or PVC board (like Azek house trim) and screw that down as a sacrificial rub rail. You can smooth the edges of Starboard by melting it or use a round over bit in a router or just sand it smooth.

That would add another 3 inches per side, so it would be better. But longer would be nice. Thanks for locating this.

They are made from 1/4 round SS rub rails. You can purchase them at West Marine and cut them to length. The ends are diagonal cuts with rounded ends. Use one of your existing to pattern the ends.

Try Taco Stainless Steel Rub Strake. Defender has them. May need to double up for required length. I have used them.

The guard looks long enough to me.



My guess is that you are the line is going to the "near" end of the cleat first. You should always go to the far end of all cleats first, then continue the wrapping and hitch.



When this is done the line will cross the toe rail around the center of the cleat. The cleat is stronger when used this way.
