lister-petter 8.5

recently purchased sailboat with lister petter 8.5 single cylinder
diesel. has dry exhaust.

will this not create a lot of heat in the cabin?
must be really loud?
the prop shaft has a little oil cup on it, there is also a little play
in the bearing, does this mean trouble?
any help would be appreciated

Are you familiar with this site

https://everythingaboutboats.org/lister-petter/

If you can't buy a water cooled exhaust off the shelf it would be quite simple to make one up.

Re: lister-petter 8.5

I use a dry exhaust on both engine and genset. I don't like having a big hole at the waterline, or a way to suck water into the works. How loud is dependent on the muffler. Industrial, residental, and hospital grades are available for my 140 HP diesel. Heat depends on ventilation and wrap. I run a squirrel cage blower full time in part for heat and in part to keep the engine room negative pressure relative to the rest of the boat, even just after the engine stops. The down pipes, mufflers, and then exhaust pipes are wrapped, with the hotest parts in high temp tape, and then the rest in ordinary fiberglass insulation meant to insulate cold plumbing. Most heat goes up the pipe and out. I added meat thermometers in two places along the exhaust system to make sure that I am not setting fire to the boat. It stays below 140 F.

Before you rip everything out, consider some testing and creative work. There really are advantages to dry exhausts.
