Re: Keeping tools rust free?

I've had my tools in an orange dry box for 30+ years. Minimal problems with rust. Dry tools before putting them away if they are wet.

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

i live on the coast and have found that my tools stay rust free with a couple of large pieces of sidewalk chalk in each drawer of the the toolbox- got the chalk at walmart and each piece is about the size of a roll of quarters- seems to work well for me

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

I spray 'em and wipe them off when I need them. Heavy zip-loc freezer bags work ok too. I also use the clear plastic food storage containers with wide openings and screw tops you can get from Smart and Final. They have been handy for all sorts of things. Keeps everything dry and you can see what's in there instantly.

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

I wipe my tools down with an old t-shirt with wd40 sprayed on it once a week (daily use)

The less used ones I give a good dose of wd40 and leave wrapped in and old t-shirt bedsheets etc

I have used T9, but it does wipe off and needs periodic replacing. I prefer using a wax based bicycle chain lubricant. I spray a couple of coats on the tools and it protects them from rusting. You do have the waxy feel when using the tool, but that is not as destructive nor staining as an oil base solution.

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

I like the WD40 quick spray and a quick wipe down every time I use them. A waterproof container is also good with one of those moisture dryer baggies that seem to come in anything shipped from China.
cheers,
Jim

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

Find a 'dollar store' buy some bins of dessicant like pint size, place in toolbox above the tools, and empty weekly if in a humid area. You may want to use a gasketed plastic 'ammo type can.

Whenever a tool has been in contact with salt water wash it in fresh water. Then add other protective measures as others have described.
FRESH WATER! NO SALT!

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

I have multiple tool bags and boxes onboard. Each one has one or two ZeRust VC1-1 capsules in it. I replace them each year to keep tools in good shape. My wife's sewing machine gets these, also.

I just keep mine in a plastic tool box in the lazarette, and after 9 years, no issues. The larger tools go in zip-up canvas tool bags - same thing.

If I have got a tool wet, or used it with salty hands, I just wipe over, with something like WD40, then dry off on paper towel before storing.

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

Be very careful when using oil/rags to protect your tools as they can start a fire.

"Oil- and solvent-soaked rags will spontaneously combust, even under normal weather conditions; the warmer the weather, the quicker the rags can reach ignition temperature. Used rags or wiping cloths should NEVER be allowed to pile up around a house, garage or construction site".

Re: Keeping tools rust free?

There are various vapor systems that work well as long as they are normally in a sealed container.
