Install an autopilot with a linear actuator on a Hunter 340?

I'm currently using a Raymarine wheel autopilot on my Hunter 340. There are times when this autopilot is seriously "challenged" with stern quartering seas. Has anyone tried to install an autopilot with a linear actuator?

Re: Install an autopilot with a linear actuator on a Hunter 340?

I installed a Raymarine Type 2 linear ram drive in my catamaran, which came equipped with a Raymarine type 2 rotary drive. You don’t need to change your autopilot controller, other than settings. All brands and models basically work the same, and you can use other brands of drives with your existing controller.
The ram drive must be attached between a structurally strong part of the hull and the steering quadrant below decks. Angles and spacing between components is critical to getting the right geometry so that the center of steering matches with the midpoint of the ram’s travel range, and the ram is at a right angle to the rudderpost at that midpoint. If your quadrant isn’t suitable you can add an extra tiller arm to your rudderpost - Edson makes one and they will custom machine it to match the angles and rudderpost diameter you specify.
I learned quite a bit by doing this project and would be happy to discuss it with you on the phone. PM me if you want to talk.

SailFastTri....thanks for your input! The problem on the Hunter 340 is space. The steering quadrant is sandwiched under a removeable deck plate. Perhaps that is why they suggest the Wheel Autopilot.

If you post some photos it might help, but cutting may be required and you must be careful about not compromising structural components
