CapEric, Here are the basics for the HC5369:

Cylinder Body - brass
Stroke = 9 inches
Bore = 1.5 inches
Fluid Volume = 13.1 = Cubic inches
Shaft diameter = 5/8 inch
Total length = 29 inches
Span from retracted shaft end to mounting foot = 23.25 inches

My Hynautics cylinder was different by the following:
Shaft diameter = 3/4 inches
Total length = 26.5 inches
Span from retracted shaft to mount = (about four inches less) I didn't write that in my notes.
Stroke = estimated between 9 & 10 inches
Fluid Volume = estimated at 13.2 cubic inches (this slightly smaller volume in the new cylinder will lower the 5.4 turns of my wheel from lock to lock by a small amount)

You will find Gary McMath at Seastar Soutions very helpful with specific questions about the HC5369 or other options. Gary.McMath@seastarsolutions

Re: Hynautics Steering

Cap Erict3, I need to correct the data in my last post where I stated that the span from the retracted shafts end to the mounting foot is 24.25 inches. This is the distance written in the Sea Stars Solutions manual, but direct observation reveals this distance as 19.25 inches. It's difficult for me to accept that the manual is wrong. I've sent an inquiry to Sea Stars Solutions and I will share the results.

I'm only posting this as I said that I would share the response regarding my question about the questionable data in the manual. I only received the advice from SeaStar Solutions to adapt my installation to the characteristics of my boat. Essentially, my question about the incorrect data in the installation/owner's manual was ignored. I'll add that, except for this apparent misinformation in the manual, the technical support from SeaStar Solutions has been excellent.

Re: Hynautics Steering

Happy Day! I finished my hydraulics refit. Flushed the old RO hydraulic oil and filled with new fluid. Bled out all the air. My new system is pressurized and all is functioning well.

Cylinder ram attachment to tiller arm.

New cylinder mount

Re: Hynautics Steering

Glad to hear that it worked out. I hope that you get decades of service from the upgrade.

Re: Hynautics Steering

I also have a K-15 cylinder on my Morgan O.I. 41. I'm considering rolling the dice on rebuild kit KS-01.

What did you have to do to modify the existing mounting bracket to accommodate the new shorter ram?

Regards,

Regards,
Just take it to a local hydraulics shop (if there is one around) they'll rebuild it for not much more than the cost of the seal kit from Hynautics. I had the cylinder on OI-41 (a K-25) rebuilt locally for $80CAD well worth the cost for me to not have to spend the time trying to figure it out!

Re: Hynautics Steering

I can confirm that Hynautics (dometic) has no information on the K-15 cylinder.

I want to reubild mine but after the OPs horror story I am reluctant to take it to a shop for fear they bugger it up.

I found I'm usually as capable if not more so than most of the grease monkeys out there.

According to the seastar site, the KS-01 should fit my bill...
SeaStar Solutions
BUT, others have mentioned here and elsewhere the kit the ordered (not specified which one) didn't fit the K-15.
https://forums.sailboatowners.com/th...repair.108262/

And on this page, the K-15 is NOT listed as a cylinder for the KS-01 kit.....

Any help appreciated!

Hynautic/Seastar don't seem to have much information on their older units. When I was rebuilding my system I contacted them and they swore up and down that hynautic never made...any of the gear I have (until I sent them pictures!!) kept telling me that seals, etc were not available for my equipment but I was able to get a seal kit for my H-35 helm and for my k-25 cylinder. Just go a a local hydraulics shop they'll rebuild it in a heartbeat. There's nothing proprietary about the cylinder.

Re: Hynautics Steering

Bump I am about to have to tackle this project and I was curious about the installation difficulty - existing bracket, new bracket? etc.

What about the stroke and displacement? Did it turn out to be correct?

Any unexpected issues?

I was forced to go from H31 pump to H21 pump.

Cheers,

Re: Hynautics Steering

I’m a big fan of the old Hynautics cylinders. I got a rebuild kit from eBay and the whole procedure was very easy and results 100%
