Fuel tank location

Evaluating a Coast 34 with a saildrive that needs to be removed to replace the original diaphragm. This would necessitate removal of the fuel tank which is mounted directly above the engine and immediately below the cockpit deck.
A tight fit that may have been a lift pump solution, but is this a safe, acceptable design ?
