Fibreglass, Nidaplast and Jotun 605

I will be making a hard dodger for my little boat soon.

In thinking of all the materials to use i thought about using nidaplast (honeycomb core) as the core material but using epoxy paint such as jotun 605 to be used instead of fiberglass resin to do all the glassing work.

What do you guys think?

Can anyone explain why the Jotun 605 epoxy wouldnt do just the same job as normal epoxy fiberglass resin?

If anyone can see a flaw in this plan that i cant see i would like to hear from you,

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

Or use tar; that ought to do the same job too!

Seriously, you want to use paint instead of resin... why?

H'mmm Jedi it seems that the force is not strong with you.

Tar will only coat the fiberglass but wont permeate it.

Whilst the epoxy paint will.

Any other takers on why epoxy paint wouldn't act structurally just like epoxy resin on fiberglass?

Thanks in advance

Matthew

Re: Fibreglass, Nidaplast and Jotun 605

Why o why would you even consider doing this? Is paint cheaper than resin there or something? I can't think of a single good reason to do this, but I can think of a whole lotta reasons not too...

chicken wire on a steel armature then cement will save a whole bunch of cash,be stronger, then you can use the 605 to make it look pretty, sticks well to ferro!

Atoll, dont you think a ferro hard dodger might be adding a bit too much weight in the wrong place?

I assume its a ferro boat, or I doubt you would recommend this. But still....

well he did say he wanted a "hard" dodger, and the paint might actually work on that application, plus it will provide great protection from pirates with automatic weapons

Ah, the REAL reason people like ferro! It certainly wouldn't be a very hard dodger if built as described in the OP...

Re: Fibreglass, Nidaplast and Jotun 605

Wow, its amazing to see the replies so far.

No one has actually tried to answer the question asked.

Everyone has tried to make their sense of self importance rise higher by adding unnecessary comments though.

Would i be right in assuming that maybe the question required to much intelligence on behlf of the posters so far?

Here's a round off applause for you guys.

Now does anyone want to give a technical answer why what i asked is not possible instead of just another stupid comment?

Matthew

actuallyto answer the ops question,

if you have ever left epoxy paint in a pot and had it cure you will notice it shrinks by 10-15% due to the high amount of solids in it.

also you will have no way of seeing all the air bubbles in the cloth and getting a proper chemical bond.

use the correct product for the application -epoxy resin or polyester, where you can time the cure accurately ,your paint mix may not cure at all,or cure too fast
do it right the first time, rather than end up with a shitty job that delaminates

Hey, nobody said its not possible. But obviously it's a terrible idea. I'll ask again, why would you even consider this? Resin is much, much cheaper than paint. And it actually works for building things.

Re: Fibreglass, Nidaplast and Jotun 605

Funny, me a troll?

There's and old saying, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers

I just asked a simple question and got stupid responses from supposedly smart people!

One even said that they made their stupid responce whilst typing the informative one? Cant but help seeking the logic behind that one?

Is that how you help people learn, by making fun of them first and then wanting them to listen to your smartness?

I must however thank both of you for your general pathetic way of passing on knowledge, you pi$$ed me off which in turn made me call a leading supplier of epoxy paint and fiberglass.

As it turns out according to there technical department there's no reason why what i suggested given the materials that i choose to use couldn't work with equal results.

So thanks for nothing you wonderful beacons of knowledge, enjoy your petty antics and hopefully you don't get the same level of replies to your next question as i did to this one.

If anyone else has any other informative information with regards to my original question i would still like to hear from you

Regards,

Matthew

Re: Fibreglass, Nidaplast and Jotun 605

ask a silly question get a silly answer is what gramma used to say

though i suspect the paint company are giggling as well and happy to sell you paint for an epoxy job, then sell you the correct product when the paint proves difficult to use!
they get stupid questions on a hourly basis
