I'm pretty sure there was more than white and black paint available in 1863.

Mine's dark blue and it is warm inside when the sun is on it which is a good thing here at 48 north. Southern latitudes, probably not the best idea.

A previous boat had a broad navy blue bootstripe. At one point wonderblond was cleaning a hanging locker and she called me, somewhat alarmed, that the hull was hot. Coming to her rescue, I pointed out that it was only hot at the level of the bootstrip. Even though that section of the hull was insulated on the inside, you could feel a drastic difference between the bootstripe and the white gelcoat above it.

Blue hulls look great, for certain. If I lived in Maine or British Columbia and never intended to venture south, I'd have one.
