I'd have no qualms at all regarding aluminum if it was marine grade

When alloyed with other metals like magnesium, aluminum develops an even higher level of corrosion resistance that can tolerate constant contact with water and saltwater. These specially treated aluminum alloys are known as marine-grade aluminum.Mar 26, 2020

I'm not too sure what the aluminum ladder is made of but surely marine grade as it is a ladder? Alternatively I could go for a SS 316 ladder (see post #2)

Your idea of using a boat hook to raise the ladder is inspired![emoji2]

Thanks
Couldn't tell if you have davits but
take a look at how I have made mine multifunctional
Stern boarding /swim ladder
Converts to stern pasarel

You can see, I have a stainless step bolted at deck level, that is how the ladder pivots and a standoff for transom to keep it at a comfortable climbing angle

When RIB is in place, ladder swings up under tender to clamp it tight on Davits...very secure.

When being used as a swim ladder I attach a 4 x T-step extension so you can climb with fins on and sit in tender

I now have a large solar panel above davits so a simple pulley lifts Click image for larger version

Magic yacht you have! Awesome

No, my yacht is still under construction so I'm getting ideas from you guys:
  • How do I launch the RIB?
  • How do I raise the stern ladder?
  • Where do I mount the wind generator?
  • Where do I mount solar panels?
  • How do I raise a MOB?
In this thread I'll just worry about boarding ladders and open up more threads shortly on the other ideas

But one thing at a time.........

Thanks for your advice (I will certainly take it on board).

This is my yacht as it is now. I'm about to load the lead ballast that I have been scavenging for the last two years.

Your planned rig setup and boom length will determine what solutions work well and looks nice.

Draw a profile with the rig in place and then look at whether you can fit a davit or a luffing system for the tender
Where you can store your outboard and where you can rig a hoist from the aft boom to pick up someone injured from the water

Good luck on your project

They were common years ago. Both my boats came with metal ladders but I don't like the look.

Thx-Ace

Did you ever try to climb up a rope ladder?

Not the most stable things compared to a metal one.

+1 on this type. Midships boarding is much easier in most conditions. Can pull up dinghy alongside and tie up. It’s always ready to go. And don’t need to drop dinghy off davits to use it

Re: Boarding ladders

hey folks. not to hijack but has anyone seen a side boarding like this. my wife has short legs. and at high tide, getting aboard from the finger pier is a struggle. so i was looking at something like what pictured below or the sailstep which is no longer in production...

Re: Boarding ladders

sailmonkey, saw that one, looking for something that's seemingly more stable than a a rope hung ladder.

Re: Boarding ladders

For a quick ladder we sometimes use fender steps. Very useful for boarding from a dinghy or from rafted boats.

We use them fairly often for the dinghy so we can throw them up on deck just before we leave and not advertise we are gone as you might w/a hard ladder. Years ago we were in an anchorage when a boat came through pointing out all the boats that were vacant based on the boarding ladders down and no dinghy. The fender steps solved this issue.

Edit: I like the second pic that Marc posted in #22 above for a simple dock step which could be made.

Think your description is pretty much spot on of a typical rope ladder. I used them (when younger) and when compared to a solid ladder were difficult to use as a swim ladder/going into the water.

If you only had a few steps (not going into the water) and stayed along the hull it maybe ok if the steps were wider, stable and didn't scratch the hull too much.

I built one that looks exactly (except for sloppy hacksaw cuts) like the sail step using 1/8" x1.5" aluminum angle iron, a couple of 3 inch pegs and a garelick footstep
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/garel...RoC4PUQAvD_BwE
Fits beautifully over aluminum toe rail. Might need wider angle irons to make a bigger box for hooking wood or fiberglass rail.
