I’m probably too poor to even ask this… but wonder what dockage on a boat this size costs?

Dockage in places I have checked will run about $60k per year, just for the slip.

I have not had a chance to inquire about insurance.

I very much appreciate all the comments. Doing as much research as I can, as I would hate for the ship to be considered scrap, as it 'SEEMS' to be in good condition.

I did get the official weight back on it, 410 tons, light ship, 514 tons fully loaded.

Also have some inquiries out about the availability of replacement parts for the engines. She has twin Fairbank Morse 38 8-1/8 engines, which seem reliable but hard to find someone that can work on them.

Yup… I’m too poor

Got picks of this boat? It sounds pretty awesome if you can pull this together.

I'll share pics once I either go under contract or walk away. She ain't pretty right now, that is for sure, but has great lines.

Thanks to everyones help around here. I have found about 10 different shipyards that can handle her. Not sure how I feel about the price. Here is an example: http://thegreatlakesgroup.com/wp-con...ive-4-1-23.pdf

Haul out alone is $18k. It's understandable, I can't imagine the capital costs of that travel lift.

Just as an update to everyone that invested time into this thread, I did put in an offer and it was verbally accepted. Have some conditionals on it, but I might be sharing some interesting stories here in the future.

Re: Big boat haul out

I think it's time to stop calling this a " boat"....a " ship" might be more appropriate

Re: Big boat haul out

Some years back I met a guy that had bought an old barge and was converting it into some kind of boat.
I should say " tried" to convert it into a boat. He had fashioned some rudimentary interior cabinetry work and some other odds and ends.

Then He contrived to put two telephone poles in it to be used as masts. His sails were gaff rigged, but where he sourced these from I could not say.

For power he had two big outboards located in wells.

I didn't see the boat being launched, but I was there when he took of for his maiden voyage. I think he made it about 1/4 mile when he ran into shore for some reason.

It's safe to say, that was pretty much the end of his cruising aspirations.

I have always thought a old but sound barge would make a great liveaboard if you had reasonable moorage (can you anchor a barge to a mooring ball that you own?). Just think, you could have a 2 bedroom house, grass lawn, a garden, and a pickleball court all on the one barge.

Re: Big boat haul out

Some shipyards have off season rates for slow times.

400 tons needs a captains license. It sounds heavy for the dimensions. A new admeasure might get it under 200 tons. I had a riveted hull tug almost that exact size and it was just over 200 tons. Riveted hull is heaver than welded because of the overlaps and rivets.

Tonnage counts in manning requirements, port costs, and insurance.

Needless to say, it was a huge expense and one they had little chance of getting their money back due to the owner being broke. The yard actually stopped taking big privately owned boats for a while until they had a system worked out where they would not get caught again.
Cheers
If that was at the flying fish point slipway in Innisfail, I was the guy that hauled it out for the owner. Another hapless boatie in this part of Australia with a big steel hulk went to jail for a murder he comitted on board while in Hinchinbrook passage… an 80’steel “do er upper” that was eventually abandoned and disposed of at the communities expense.

It's 190 GRT, but 410 tons deadweight. Welded steel ice breaker, with the bow being 25mm thick.

When I talked to the USGC, as long as its documented and uninspected, there are no license requirements for operating. Now, what insurance says will be a completely different story.
