Best Adhesive for Fabric to Non-porous Surface?

I need to attach velcro strips (with cloth backing) to painted and varnished wood and fiberglass surfaces. (The other part of the velcro will be sewed to mosquito netting.) I know there are several different types of adhesives that should work, but I thought I'd ask first to see if anyone has used something that has held up well over the years.

Thanks.

Contact cement. Use it all the time on the boat. Works great.

How about 3M 4200 adhesive/sealant?

The good 2" wide velcro comes with very tenacious adhesive. 3M is one. Ebay is a good source for a roll.

Yeah, I've had the 3m take paint off with it. Hint: for cushions etc, use 2" wide on the hard surface, and sew 1" wide on the cushion, that way less risk of pulling the sticky one off!

Re: Best Adhesive for Fabric to Non-porous Surface?

Our experience with sticky-back velcro is that over a fairly short period (a few months) the glue fails.. This is especially true in the tropics with high temps and humidities. Have never found a really good substitute, either. Tried various types of one-pot contact cements, SC-2000 two-pot contact cement, epoxy and so on.

So, I too am interested in some other approach to this problem.

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Best Adhesive for Fabric to Non-porous Surface?

I use the 3M Marine Reclosable Attachment System 06539 on non-porus surfaces. I used it to attach one of those toll payer devices to the windshield of my truck seven or eight years ago. This is in Miami with the sun shining directly on the adhesive through the windshield. The adhesive has never failed yet I'm able to remove the device and and replace it as often as I want. I would think any of the 3M Scotchmate Reclosable products with VHB adhesive would work even better in that application.
