Re: Yanmar YSB8 Oil Spin Filter

I have a YSB12 and I just took the filter out for the first time (second year owning it). I made a mistake in that I didn’t pay attention to the orientation it came out in. Am I correct in assuming that it needs to go back in with the hole in the filter at the 2 o’clock position? That would mean the none circular part of the metal is pointing up?

Thanks if anyone is still hanging around here and knows the answer!

Just make sure the hole in the filter aligns with the hole in the case but yes thats 2 oclock. Was there much crap in the filter hole?

Re: Yanmar YSB8 Oil Spin Filter

There wasn’t a ton actually it was pretty clean. But turning the filter and putting it in diesel brought out a bunch of crap.

Ok that’s what I thought. Oddly enough though the case has two holes in it, one around 9 o’clock and one around 2 o’clock. It looked like the hole in the filter wouldn’t align with the 9 o’clock hole which is why I guessed in the 2 o’clock position.

Thank you so much for confirming that. Iv been looking all over for a reference for this. Seems like something you don’t want to screw up.

Re: Yanmar YSB8 Oil Spin Filter

The 9 o'clock hole is the inlet port to the filter.
The 2 o'clock hole is the outlet port for the filter.

The 9 o'clock port comes directly from the oil pump outlet port.

Are you rotating the T handle for a few turns every so often. BTW, you can't over do this action so more is better than less.

Re: Yanmar YSB8 Oil Spin Filter

While we are talking preventive maintenance, another good habit for these single horizontal cylinder engines is to rotate the engine through to TDC of the compression stroke if you are leaving the engine off for say more than a week. Use the decompression lever to assist in rotating the engine to this position after shut down.

This ensures both valves are fully closed and there is minimal air left in the cylinder - prevents cylinder / ring corrosion etc.

So I assume the hole in the filter should be aligned with the outlet port (2 o’clock) as was mentioned above?

Also I wasn’t turning the handle, I know now I should be!

Thanks for the tips on preventative maintenance, good to know for winter!

Brayden I suggest you download both the yse8/12 manuals & the ysm 8/12 manuals. I think they are in the CF library. The ysm manual has more info & they are largely the same. Good sign you didnt have too much crap in the oil filter cavity.
Good advice Wotname gave you.

Re: Yanmar YSB8 Oil Spin Filter

Update:

Successful oil change and cleaned the permanent filter with diesel!

Fuel filter now… does anyone know the replacement part for the primary (big filter in the back) maybe it’s a fuel water separator… I’ll attach a picture of what it looks like shortly I cannot find a replacement part anywhere. Old owner said he only ever changed the secondary (smaller orange paper filter).
