If you're looking to cruise around 10, I'd say you'll need more pitch on your props. When I mentioned gear ratios being the same I meant the ratios in the gearboxes. They're (the 20 and the 40) both something like 2.08:1.
The gearbox ratio sounds right, one of the taller gearbox ratios of the brands. If your at 5500 with 20's I'm sure I'll need more than 8", I should get 6000 (max for engine) before full throttle with the 8".

Next step is 9" which is a fair jump but might do the trick.

If you're going to cruise on one engine a lot it needs to come up to full RPM's under one engine also. (within the full RPM range)

Re: Which outboards for me ?

Bryan on "School's Out" had his props re-pitched to 9". (Tohatsu 20's which also have pretty similar gear ratios.) For the 20's they're possibly a little over-pitched, but not severely. ~ 8 1/2 would probably be about right.

So yeah, I'd think your 40's should handle 9" pitch OK, maybe even more.

Also bear in mind that they'll "loosen up" and produce a bit more power after 50 hours or so...
