Water pump - new or rebuild

opinions on rebuilding the water pump or get a new one. Small leak in one we have. Have taken out the current one. Yenmar engine

I assume you are referring to the water pump">raw water pump and not the fresh water pump?

Would depend on the condition of the pump. I would first disassemble and look at the condition of the shaft, bearings, seals, seats and the cover. Then check parts costs and decide based on the difference.

As a matter of fact and doing exactly that right now. Have a Westerbeke W58 (58 HP, 4 cylinder diesel) and was able to identify the pump as a Sherwood R30G-1. Can find it online for about half what the Westerbeke dealer is asking.

New discount about $350 for the pump. Disassembled the pump and found the shaft was completely shot. Major rebuild kit includes seals, bearings, bushings and impeller for about $175. Add the shaft a few other bits and pieces and it was over $250. Decided to go with a new pump.

Skip, which method did you use to identify the pump?

Sometimes is easier/smarter to replace something instead of rebuilding and waiting for the next piece to fail.

Actually two methods to get the final answer. The pump is marked Sherwood so went to the Sherwood web site which has nice photos and matched mine to a possible of two different models. Then did a search on a couple of web sites to confirm which exact model. Fortunately there's a very good Pearson 424 owners web site. My 422 shares hull, rig and most mechanics with the 424 so was able to use info there.
