Volvo Penta MD22 fuel injection pump reference

Hi, I'm looking for the reference of this fuel injection pump on a Volvo Penta MD22, the pump is leaking and I want to found a gasket kit to fix it. If anybody have tips and tricks to deal with such pump I'm more than happy to listen to your story about it !

This man have a tricky way to do it, i have to say that i have the exact same O ring leaking, and if i am doing his technique without taking off the pump completely (and redo the timing belt and so on, it can be quite nice)

It’s a Bosch VE-4 pump. Very common. Probably there is a plate with info on the other side of the pump from what we can see, or perhaps stamped on the flat area that we see under all the layers of paint.

You can get seal rings at any decent fuel injection shop.

Re: Volvo Penta MD22 fuel injection pump reference

There is a label on the pump. Different versions of this engine came with different pumps, do not take anybody’s answer without your own verification.

This recently happened to ours as well. Mysteriously, began leaking from several places all at once after 27 years and 9000 hours. We sent it off for a full rebuild. Unless you really know your stuff, (which you might) and have all the tools required, (which you might) that’s likely the best way to deal with this. But I’m guessing if you don’t know where to find the label this is best left to a specialist.

Thank you for the video Rakon, I particularly liked the bit where he released the bolts holding the hydraulic head and then in pursuit of cleanliness used an air jet to blow the dirt into the pump body. There is a lot to learn from watching this guy, like avoiding the use of power tools to tighten or release injector pump screws and not tensioning them to the correct torque. The demonstration of how to test the stop solenoid was informative too.

What was your pump model ? I'm also thinking about a full refite, how much did it cost you ?

I also noticed this "bad habit" maybe I'm less shock because I use to work on third world country, if you can do the gasket swap technic without redoing all the belt trimming it's save a lot of time...my concern is will the gasket twist...

Re: Volvo Penta MD22 fuel injection pump reference

The “gasket twist” is the least of the problems, if the hydraulic head oring has deteriorated to the point of leaking case pressure there’s a fairly good chance that all the other orings and seals in the pump are in a similar condition, best to take it to a Tech and get a full service. Great injector pump, great video and 10 things you should never do with or to an injector pump.
There’s another interesting pitfall with the VE pump stop solenoid..... there are two different versions, one is activated to run, my old bush basher Pajero 4WD has this “hot to run” solenoid but I recently did a job on an MD 22 that had a “hot to stop” solenoid with an internal coil spring that keeps it open while running and a push button to stop the engine
