Time for new engine?

I’m looking at buying a 44 foot sailboat that has a Volvo Penta TMD22 76 hp engine with approx 6,000 hours. It has been serviced, and it is supposed to be working well (according to the seller’s broker). Assuming it is, is it realistic to do long range cruising (from the Chesapeake to Caribbean, Med, etc.) if I also keep it serviced? Assuming I need to replace it, what’s a ballpark figure for putting in a new engine of good (but not high end) quality?

6,000 hours, for a diesel engine that has been well-maintained, is not all that much. I would get a qualified mechanic to perform an engine survey on it, and make your decisions based on that. It may well have many more years of faithful service left in it. Or, if it has been neglected, it may not.
